Body blow to Blues’
Clitheroe....................... .0 Atherton L R ..........................0 CLITHEROE’S faint title hopes were dealt a severe body blow when, th ey failed to overcome lowly A th e r to n Laburnum Royers a t Shawbridge on Tues- day night. In a game of few chances for
either team, Clitheroe gave the ball away too often and struggled to really trouble a determined Atherton side and had to settle for a point in a goal-less draw. The result was all th e more
frustrating when it emerged that North West Counties’ First Divi sion leaders Prescot Cables had lost 2-1 to Newcastle Town - meaning i t really was a case of two p oints dropped for Lee Sculpher’smen. Gary Rishton came closest to
breaking th e deadlock for Clitheroe, heading over the bar from a Mark Stewart cross in the f irs t half, a f te r A the r ton had failed to clear a Clitheroe comer. Another poor clearance from a
comer in the second half fell to Rishton again. This time from inside the area and with his back to goal, the defender turned well but saw his shot go wide of the
post. Atherton's strikers, Massay
and Crumpton, had th e best opportunities for th e visitors. Crumpton forcing Kris Richens to be alert to keep out a well stuck
free-kick and Massay shooting weakly a t the Clitheroe goalkeep er when through on goal.
: Atherton came close to stealing
all three points in th e , 82nd minute. Firstly a strong run from Crumpton, resulted in his power ful shot being pushed over the crossbar by Kris Richens, and
from the resulting comer, a crowd ed penalty area saw a header can non back off the crossbar. Clitheroe seemed overly anx
ious a t times and failed to pass the ball well on a sticky surface. Long range efforts from Jason Jones and Ba r r ie H a r t typified Clitheroe's lack of creativity. Four bookings for Clitheroe, in
what was never a physical game meant players holding back on tackles and this gave the incentive for Atherton to push forward. However with their current plight a t the wrong end of the table they were more than happy to sit back and take away a well deserved point. Clitheroe................ ............... -2 Nantwich Town ......... .. .1 TWO first half goals from winger Chris W h ittin g h am helped Clitheroe overcome Nantwich Town a t Shawbridge and make it five wins in a row. Whittingham, who is enjoying
a regular start on the right flank this season, gave Clitheroe a well- deserved half-time lead. Both his goals came in similar
fashion, and were assisted by Gary Jackson. I t took just seven minutes for
Clitheroe to open th e scoring, Jackson feeding Whittingham on the right, and his strong run was finished with a confident shot past the stranded Heeps in the Nantwich goal. His second, a virtual carbon
copy of the opener, arrived on 35 minutes. Jackson was again the provider as Whittingham out paced Mark Gardner before sup plying a similar finish. The half-time lead could have
been greater for Clitheroe. Jack- son broke through one-on-one
with the goalkeeper as early as the second minute, but Heeps saved well with his feet. : ' Ja ckson again had a g re a t
opportunity on 17 minutes when a ball from Simon Gamer found the Clitheroe striker bearing down again on the Nantwich goal. This time he elected to go round the goalkeeper, but Heeps managed to get a touch on th e ball and force it dear.
; Nantwich played a neat pass
ing game, but were often let down by the quality of their final ball. A shot from distance by the lively Melford K night forced Kris Richens into action.on 27 min utes. Jackson again brought out the
best from the Nantwich keeper on 36 minutes as he turned on the edge of the area and curled the b a ll towards th e to p corner - Heeps again equal to the task. Neil Spencer came close to
increasing the Clitheroe lead early in the second half with two good opportunities.
, Just after the break; his' header
from a Lee Sculpher free kick nar rowly went over the bar, and two minutes later i t was his turn to m is a one-on-one opportunity as he chipped the ball over the; on coming goalkeeper, bu t saw his
attempt drift wide of the post Jus t after the hour, a flowing
move down the right hand side involving Spencer and Whitting
ham saw a low cross fired into the area. Jackson was more alert than anyone else! b u t even w ith a despairing lunge was unable to
make contact with the ball. Nantwich pulled a goal back on
68 minutes. Darren Twigg, who had been signed on loan for the game from Kidsgrove, found
space inside the area, and his deft chip floated over Richens. Despite this i t was Clitheroe
who looked the more likely to add to the scoreline with Spencer, Whittingham and Stua r t Tod- hunter all having chances late on. Skelmersdale . United
Reserves................ ...................0 Clitheroe Reserves........... -..1 A SUPER strike from Martin Fle tch e r gave Clitheroe the' points in their top of the table clash with Skelmersdale United. The result now puts Clitheroe
just a point behind United and new leaders Padiham in th e No r th West Counties’ League Reserve Division. The' Blues second-string have
yet to tas te defeat this season, although the number of games they have drawn could prove to
be their Achilles’ heel. ‘ f Clitheroe had the better of the
early exchanges, and both Fletch er and Matt Parker were unlucky not to open the scoring in a tight
first h a lf .' - ; Tough-talking a t half-time
from reserve team boss Lee Boyer had the desired effect as the young Blues raised their game after the break. Parker, Fletcher and Matt Gar
ner all went dose, but the winning goal came in the 54th minute. Good play by Andy Preston
and Danny Stanley set-up Fletch er, who turned exquisitely on the edge of th e a rea before firing home left-footed. Garner and Parker had efforts
save superbly by the keeper, and th e back-line of Alf Russell, Danny Craig, Jon Greenland and
Danny Potts snuffed out any dan ger United threatened to cause in the remainder of the match.
