PEACE- w a s . thev messagfe; in Clitheroe, as leaders ofBritain and

the USA prepare for war in Iraq. Members of'Ribble Action.Group

and its supporters gathered on Satur day at the Castle Gates for a two-part Meeting for Peace opposing the current military build up for war.-: At midday white balloons representing

doves of peace bobbed on the railings and banners held by the protestors made it clear that the political rhetoric continues to be opposed-by many people in the country.

-. ......... In the evening, despite lashing rain,

about 50 people met and lit candles to express, a spokesman said “the personal feelings of those in the crowd and to cast light on a darkening world.” Organisers said that following the huge

anti-war march in London last month, the meeting in Clitheroe was emphasising the fact that the British Prime Minister and the President of the USA were not listening to the millions who were opposed to military action..

,, “We do have so lutions”, he said,,

difficulties caused by providing solutions, • as all the countries, regimes, religions and

meeting, a vigil, at the Castle Gates on the evening that the war starts.”

Newsagent fined for firework offences

A WHALLEY newsagent sold fireworks to a 13-year- old girl sent into the shop by trading standards officers. Blackburn magistrates

heard that the girl was told to “help herself” from an open cabinet when she asked to buy a packet of rockets. And a t no stage did shop keeper Mark Edward Richardson ask how old she was or request any form of identification. Richardson, of Glendale

Drive, Mellor, owner of Whalley News, King Street, pleaded guilty to supplying goods prohibited by safety regulations and failing to store explosives safely or securely. He was fined a total of £450 and ordered to pay £300 towards the costs of the prosecution brought by Lan cashire County Council Trading Standards Depart ment. -

-

Mr Nicholas McNamara (prosecuting), said the test

purchase had been set up fol lowing a complaint by*a member of the public. On the day, three days before Bon fire Night, a trading stan dards officer entered the shop posing as a customer shortly

.before the 13-year-old girl. The officer then witnessed the transaction: 7, Mr McNamara said the

cabinet containing the fire works did not have a lid and opened mto the public area of the shop

, When interviewed

Richardson accepted selling the fireworks and told the

- officers he was tired, having been up since 3 a.m., and he had not really looked at the

. girl.-He accepted there were no notices up, explaining it was illegal to sell fireworks to

■ anyone under the age of 18. . When asked why he had

not renewed his explosives licence/ he said he believed it ran for two years. 1

:: Richardson, who was not

represented by a solicitor, said he could not dispute the facts presented by the prose cution. He said the glass lid of

the fireworks cabinet had been broken during cleaning ju s t two days before the offences. “I don’t intend to sell them

again, it’s just a nightmare,” said Richardson, u

The prosecution came on

the day when local MPs wel comed a proposed crack down on firework sales. A Private Members’ Bill

: has received its second read ing in th e House of Com mons. Backed by the Gov ernment, it seeks to ban fire works or restrict sales, m a t ing it harder for young thugs

: to terrorise residents, pets and wild animals. • I t would also give local

councils greater powers to ban irresponsible shopkeep ers from selling fireworks. .
