Just as Vauxhall’s Zafira rewrote the rulebook for
mini-MPVs, its smaller Meriva slablemate looks likely to do the same for smaller Supemiini-based
MPVs in the class below. It’s based on a Corsa platform, making it a good deal smaller than a Zafira, which rides on Astra mechanicals. At 4042mm in total length, its still a tad shorter than an Astra, but with its wheel at each comer stance and it’s high roofline, the General Motors designers responsible for the Meriva have been able to create an interior that’s supremely spacious. Three petrol engines are available, either eight or sixteen valve versions of the 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine that generate 87 and tOObhp respectively or a 125bhp 1.8-litre powerplant. A lOObhp 1.7-lilre CDTi diesel is also slated to appear in due course. All of these engines are tried and tested Vauxhall units although the three trim levels available to Meriva buyers aren’t familiar Vauxhall fare. You won’t find LS, Club or SXi models here. Instead we see Life, Enjoy and Design variants. Good to know that you can now get a Life at your local Vauxhall dealer. As with any vehicle that louts itself as some sort of MPV, the Meriva stands or falls on more practical considerations such as interior space, the ingenuity of its sealing system, passenger access and overall comfort. It’s here that the Meriva comes up trumps. Just as Vauxhall aced the opposition with the Zafira’s Flex7 seating system, the Meriva aims to do likewise with Its less snappily tilled FlexSpace arrangement. With five seals to play with, the Meriva doesn’t have as many tricks up its sleeve as the Zafira, but you’ll still be able to wow your passengers with a few deft flicks of the wrist. Most of the time, the Meriva functions as a conventional five seat supermini-MPV, but many of us have tried travelling five up in cars like these and it can feel a bit of a pinch. The centre seal can fold flat into the footwell, leaving the two remaining seats at liberty to slide independently, not only backwards and forwards, but also on runners from side to side. This makes the Meriva feel extremely spacious indeed. But why slop at four? Vauxhall have equipped the Meriva with the capacity for all of the passenger seals to fold flat, freeing up an enormous 1,300 litres of available space. Even with the rear seals in position, there’s a creditable 560 litres available. Vauxhall seems to have a winner on its hands in the chunky shape of the Meriva. If you don’t want a van- based budget MPV yet can’t stretch to inflated mini- MPV prices, try here first.

Creating a new class of car is always a gamble. There lend to be three Inevitable results. Either you get in first and it pays off big (think Renault Espace) or you’re first to market but someone subsequently does It a whole lot belter (hello Toyota Picnic). Or you fall spectacularly on your face and everybody laughs at you (Suzuki X90). Vauxhall claim their Signum ploughs an entirely new furrow and, if their claim is to believed, they’ve just upped the ante quite considerably. Based on a stretched Vectra chassis, the Signum may claim to offer something new but in certain respects slicks to a well-worn formula. Vauxhall have twigged that cars that offer additional versatility such as the Zafira and the Meriva are the ones that are cornering increasingly big shares of their respective markets. Part of the reason for this is because they have offered a level of utility that many rivals in general, and Ford in particular, have been unable to match. Meanwhile the more mainstream models, whilst maintaining share against the rest, have seen the total market size nibbled away. Therefore it made sense to attempt to offer innovative and versatile cars in as many shapes and
forms as possible and the Signum is a new take on this recipe.

Priced from £17,995 to £25,600, the well-equipped Signum range offers a more upmarket alternative to the Vectra at prices which still weigh in at several thousands less than the equivalent German prestige opposition. One of the key features that Vauxhall seem very proud of is the Signum’s so-called FlexSpace seating concept. This allows the outer rear pair of seats to slide back and forth, allowing a trade off between legroom and luggage capacity. What’s more, these seats can also recline to a 30- degree angle. Although it makes a big play of its spaciousness, the Signum works best as a four, rather than five sealer. The central berth in the back features some rather novel tricks. The cushion flips through 180-degrees, revealing cup holders and storage boxes. It can also accommodate the Travel Assistant, another Vauxhall invention that’s standard on the range-topping Elite but a mere £200 on the Elegance and Design trim levels that constitute the Signum line up. The Travel Assistant offers the two rear seat passengers a pair of folding tables, a fridge, a litter tub, cup holders, a 12v power outlet and a holder for a portable DVD player. It’s all rather civilised, much like flying window seat in Club class No fewer than six engines are offered, three familiar faces and three that haven’t been purloined from elsewhere in the Vauxhall line up. The lOObhp 2.0- litre and 125bhp 2.2-litre lurbodiesels are tried and tested powerplanis, as is the 211bhp 3.2-lilre V6 petrol unit. Of more interest is a 2.2-litre direct Injection petrol engine - Vauxhall’s very first - which cranks out 155bhp and promises real world fuel savings and hefty torque. The other option if you want an even punchier petrol engine offers a lot of power for your pound and may well prove the most popular choice, a 2.0-lilre turbo ’four’, good for 175bhp and seen in the Saab 9-3 line up. Also borrowed from Saab - and Renault - is the 177bhp
3.0-litre TDl V6 diesel which marks the lop of the Signum tree.
The Signum is an interesting and bold venture for Vauxhall, a company that has in the past erred on
the conservative side. Let’s hope the gamble pays off.
