Coward’s classic weepie set for a brief June encounter
Brriief Encounter: The Lowry,
e Encounter;
Salford Quays; June 24th - 28th
MORE stars from the world of television soap are set for a “Brief Encounter” at The Lowry in June. Karen Drury, of
“ Brookside” Richard Walsh — 'Sicknote' from “London’s Burning” take to the stage as Noel Cow ard's love struck housewife and doctor in “ Brief Encounter” which opens on June 24th and runs until June 28th. The award-winning Middle Ground Theatre
Company’s scriptwriters have skilfully adapted Coward's screenplay for the stage. They have based their
production on the classic version directed by David Lean - which memorably starred Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. This atmospheric and

moving new stage adapta tion also features a superb supporting cast with Lynette McMorroug, of “ Crossroads'” and Nick Wilton of “ Carrot's Lib” as the comic couple. Myr tle the tea lady and Albert the railway guard. How many can forget Stanley Hollaway in the film ? At a chance meeting on
the Milford Junction sta tion platform, Alec kindly removes a piece of grit from respectable housewife Laura's eye.

back in time The Steamie;
Oldham Coliseum SEEING Tony Roper’s “The Steamie” was a wal low in nostalgia for me. As a child growing up in
Glasgow I can just remem ber a public washhouse as part of the local corpora tion swimming pool. My father was one of
the first to introduce laun- drettes which brought an end to the steamies in the city. I still use the expression
“The talk of the steamie” to refer to any juicy piece of gossip. Victoria Balneaves,
Lynne McCallum, Linda Duncan McLoughlin and Jane Nelson Peebles play four women drawn togeth er as they not only do their washing, but also to blether about their hopes and fears with humour and moments of pathos, occasionally in song. Jack McGowan is the
maintenance man who is tricked and conned by them.
The production is direct Here begins an illicit
six-week love affair between the two married, middle class individuals. Characterised by quiet des- peration and stolen moments, the pair's chaste romance develops over their weekly meetings.
“Brief Encounter” is a
love story to end all love stories. Set in the winter of 1938
and packed with beautiful period detail, it is a nostal gic romance which could well need an ample supply of tissuesi
ed by Eric Potts who has performed in an earlier Col iseum production of the play and the excellent stage set is by Dawn Ailsop, who has cleverly conveyed the line of old-fashioned wash sinks and drying racks, not an easy task. I don’t know what the
good Lancashire folk of Oldham made of the dia logue, although they laughed heartily. But I loved it, a tase of my child hood.
PIPPA MUNRO Brit Award chart-toppers Adventure time
Liberty X; Corporation Park, Blackburn; July 12th
A GROUP which featured in the Brit Awards will headline a free two-day music show in the North West. The chart-topping band
Liberty X will perform at Blackburn’s Corporation Park on July I2th as part of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council’s “Arts in the Park 2003”. They will appear on the
first day which be a con temporary day with more than 20 rock and pop bands performing on two stages. On the Sunday the accent
will be on classical music, with local groups demon strating their abilities. But the main classical attraction will be the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
playing against the back drop of a stirring fireworks finala Executive Member for
the council’s Leisure and Culture Portfolio Coun Kate Hollern said: “We have worked extremely hard to ensure that this will be one of the most memorable events ever. “We are delighted to have
booked Liberty X, one of the hottest young bands around. “This is the council’s
showpiece event of the sum mer and we expect it to be sensational,” she added. The council has also
warned that more people are expected this year and “strongly advises”adults to accompany young people.
