was expected to really hit the opposition for six.

to make a stunning MPV. Great engines, state-of-the-art production facilities, a track record for innovative design and packaging all backed up by some redoubtable marketing muscle. And yet when the first pictures oh the Mercedes Viano fell on the desks of motoring journalists the length and breadth of the coun try, you could almost hear jaws clunking onto pine veneer. It was another van. The press release started bullishly but with
in the first paragraph it mentioned the two different wheelbases available and three differ ent body lengths - prime evidence of a com mercial vehicle background. Despite our dis appointment at Mercedes not building the Mercedes of MPVs, the reasons behind the development of the Viano are actually very sound.
It is only here in the UK that we adopt a
snobbish attitude to this type of vehicle. In continental Europe, models like the Volkswa gen Caravelle Limousine and the Mercedes V- class have been enormously successful. On the other hand, we perpetually grouse about the fact that MPVs never make that much sense in the real world because when full of people, there is nowhere for the luggage to go and yet the solution was right there in front of us. Mercedes V-Class and now Viano.
Whichever model you choose, common sense practicality comes as standard
So, we cannot expect stratospheric sales
from the Viano, but for those who take a more enlightened view what else is on offer? There is certainly a good deal of choice and a far broader range of applications compared to the V-Class. The three vehicle lengths range from 4,748 to 5,223mm long and the two different wheelbases (3,200mm and 3,400mm) point to the fact that as well as regular and long mod els, there is also a long overhang version that will be utterly vast inside. Four engines are offered, two CDi diesel
power plants of 88 and 150 b.h.p. and a pair of slx-cyUnder petrol units of 190 and 218 b.h.p. respectively. Power is transferred to the back wheels via either a six-speed manual or a five- speed automatic transmission. Quite how the powerful petrol models will drive is going to be interesting, the old 174 b.h.p. V280 model feel ing as if it had a good deal more engine than either steering, handling or brakes. The Viano should be different. The rear
wheel drive layout gives better weight distrib ution and the brakes are reassuringly beefy discs all round, 300mm at the front and a bare ly smaller 296mm at the back. Two trim levels are available. Trend and
Ambiente. Whichever model you choose, com mon sense practicality comes as standard. The ergonomics are impressive and the dash- mounted gear lever is a nice touch. If you want to cut a dash on your street, the
Viano may well pull up short. It does look a little swoopier than a V-class, especially around the front end, but the silhouette is still a good deal more commercial than classy. Still, the front is nicely rounded and there are some rather extravagant swage lines along the flanks. The Viano ploughs a confident furrow but it is one that -
in this country at least -
does not promise a lucrative return. What it boils down to is that if you want a car, buy a car. If you need an MPV, buy one that can really do the business. The Viano is part of a very small breed that answers that calling.

ERCEDES’ previous weapon of choice to go head to head with the cream of the MPV crop was some
wheels, the A8 3.7 utilises Audi’s trade mark quattro four-wheel drive transmis sions. What is odd is that it is priced so close to the much more powerful A8 4.2. Perhaps the pricing is all part of
Audi’s scheme, to bait us with the 3.7- litre car and then switch us to the more expensive 4.2-litre model. Whatever the rationale behind the pricing, there is no getting away from the fact that the 3.7- litre variant is a thing of beauty, a car which offers the sort of build quality many of its rivals could only wish for.

so to 60 m.p.h. that would mark it down as a genuinely brisk car.
Nevertheless, 8.1 seconds for the bench
mark sprint is a very respectable showing. Peak torque is generous at 1251b/ft, coming on stream at a modest 2,800rpm. With a combined fuel figure in excess of
40 m.p.g. and CO2 emissions pegged at a measly 165g/km, the Turbo 130 should not cost an arm and a leg to run. The engine itself is a high-tech all-alloy unit with Dynamic Variable Valve Timing and a 16- valve cylinder head. The suspension has also been given a thorough going over, with stiffer springs and a meaty rear anti-roll bar.
The car’s exterior treatment is not for the retiring. The ‘double wedge’ window line
gave the standard YRV an unconventional profile, but the Turbo 130 adds front and rear spoilers and deep side skirts. There is also an Impreza-aping bonnet scoop and fog lamp set up, 10-spoke alloy wheels and a standard panorama fixed glass roof. UK cars also get twin exhaust tail pipes, special badging and some rather OTT side stripes. Inside, you will find an aluminium foot rest plus a leather-rimmed steering wheel, gear knob and gaiter. The YRV Turbo ^vill doubtless appeal to
the young and young at heart who want something a little less common than the Citroen Saxo VTR, a car that has virtually monopolised the warm hatchback market. Pitched halfway between the prices of the Saxo VTR and its hotter VTS sibling, the YRV offers an interesting alternative. It marries that uniquely Japanese blend of practicality and performance appeal.
