CLITHEROE chairman Dave Burgess is hoping the side get their just rewards on Wednes day in the Worthington Chal lenge Trophy Final a t Bury’s Gigg Lane (kick-off 7-30 p.m.). The Blues confirmed runners-

lost twice to Mossley in the league, but they were both close games. “So it is second against third,

Mossley........................3 Clitheroe ..................1 CLITHEROE will hope for a better result on Wednesday after this League Cup Final dress rehersal on Saturday. Two early goals for the

hosts set up victory in a game' that was dominated by the Mossley defence. Nathan Brookes scored

both early goals for Moss ley in the third and sixth minutes. His first saw him lob the

ball over Kris Richens, and his second came after good play down the wing from Russell Headley. Jason Jones tried to

revive the Blues and his surging run on 25 minutes almost brought Clitheroe back into the game. Picking the ball up

inside his own half, his mazy run of strength and determination resulted in his shot being deflected wide of the Mossley post. Lee Cryer also had a

great opportunity, but somehow directed his head er wide from five yards out. Mark Philips and Paul

Taylor at the heart of the Mossley defence seemed to win every aerial ball that Clitheroe knocked forward, and their physical presence was the key to the home team’s victory. The two huge central

defenders easily handled long balls toward Cryer and Gary Jackson all after noon. ■Trailing at half-time,

Clitheroe searched hard for a way back into the game and attacked the Mossley

Past Captain delivers the winning score

By EDWARD LEE

PAST Captain Jim Hindle continued his fine start to the season by winning the Post Office Cup at Mytton Fold at the weekend. Earlier in the week, part

nered by Roger Altham, Hindle came fifth in the ELPGA Alliance meeting at Hesketh with 42 stable- ford points. At the weekend, his

bogey score of, +6 saw him win by one shot from Peter Tomlinson (+5), with Nick Pearson (+4) in third place. Jake Chadwick and

Steve Brooks both finished leyel to take the honours in Division One. . Ian Slough (+4) was one

better than Graham Child in Division Two, and Mar tin Holden (+3) took Divi sion Three after a card play-off with John Atkin son. At Stonyhurst Park, M.

Young 70-10-69 and J. Blockeel 86-20-66 were the divisional winners in the April Medal, while J. Fos ter, M. Young, A. Bannis ter and J. Austin were the leading, players in the ELGA Handicap Trophy qualifier and will go on to represent the club at Shaw Hill later in the month. Kevin Grimshaw

, emerged as the clear win- ' ner of the Frank Long- worth Trophy at Whalley

GC. His round of 89-23-66.-

saw him claim a five-shot win over Tim Stanley (84- 13-71), while the divisional prizes went to Chris Black- adder (79-5-74) and Colin Thompson (91-19-72). The winter league final

saw Chris Blackadder and John Sherry beat John Blackadder and Chris Summers. And low-scoring, was

reen Micklewright will again represent Clitheroe GC in the Australian Spoon Foursomes North ern Division Area Final this year, to be played at Kirby Lonsdale GC in July. And they will be hoping

to gain a place in the finals to be held at Hendon GC in September and retain the Australian Spoons which they won in the final last year. They topped Division

Two with 34 points and emerged as the overall win ners after a card play-off. Division One honours

went to Chris Stokes and Mary Eglin (34) following a consulatation of cards with Dorothy Dady and Edith Child. Third place went to Jean.Anne Speak = and Pat Taylor a point fur ther back. The overall winners

topped Division Two ahead of Trudy Walne arid Gill Wightman (32) and Sue Johnson and Karen Stanworth (30). Tracy Bentley won the

Silver Division of the LGU Medal at Clitheroe GC when she scored 84-10-74. Second place went to Edith Child (97-19-78) with Sophie Brooks (88-10- 78) in third place. • Libby McEwan (108-36-;

72) scored a one-shot win in the Bronze Division. Barbara Crowther (103-30- 73) was second and/Jane. Chandler (110-28-82), took

third place. Lady-members at Whal-:

back line in the second period, but it was Mossley who scored again though, following a quickly taken comer. From a position wide-

lef t of the penalty area, Headley curled the ball over Richens and into the far comer. Clitheroe kept looking

for a goal, and on 80 min utes Jackson gave them hope. Latching onto a Cryer

through ball, he placed his shot past Hilton in the Mossley goal. Indeed i t could have

been a grandstand finish to the game if Andy Cowking had scored from a great opportunity only minutes later. Following a goalmouth scramble, the ball fell to

Cowking five yards from goal, and with the net at his mercy, he somehow managed to fire the ball over with a shot that just about summed up ’ Clitheroe’s day. Nantwich T ow n ..........0 Clitheroe......................4 CLITHEROE clinched

. runners-up spot following a convincing victory on Tuesday night. Three first-half goals put

the Blues on their way as they ended their league

: programme on a high note. • It took just ten minutes

for the first goal to arrive, when Gary Jackson chased a long ball. Jackson’s pres- ence seemed to affect the goalkeeper, who spilled the ball in bizzarre fashion. Lee Cryer was the fortu nate player who was able to

tap the\ball home to give Clitheroe'the lead. Chris Whittingham dou

bled the lead 10 minutes later. Paddy Lauber cut inside

from the. left before releas ing Whittingham on ihe right, who cut into the

■ penalty area and drilled a ■ low shot past the goalkeep er at the near post.

! Midway through the

half Mark Stewart saw his headed effort pushed clear by the goalkeeper, but Nantwich failed to clear the danger and Andy Cowking was on hand to stroke home the third. ; Cryer had a couple, of

chances to further increase the scoreline before half- time, but first saw his head er well saved and then just failed 'to connect to-'a

Lauber cross. Clitheroe began the sec

ond half brightly and Whittingham saw his shot well saved early on. The fourth goal arrived

on 55 minutes when Jack- son touched home a left; wing cross.

. , With Clitheroe in th e '

ascendancy, they were able , to introduce all three sub- , stitutes and pushed Whit tingham further forward. The winger turned strik

er did have a couple of chances late on, but could n’t add to the goals tally. With the league season

ending on such a positive note, the Blues go into next week’s League Cup Final in confident mood, and hope fully they can produce a similar performance to this to secure the trophy.
