ALL four occupants of a Mitsubishi Shogun were taken to hospital with injuries after their vehicle left the road and collided with a tree on an isolated road near Bolton- by-Bowland. Firemen from Clitheroe and Settle, were

called to the scene and assisted in cutting. parts of the vehicle’s crumpled bodywork away to allow paramedics to release the four occupants. Police said all were taken to Blackburn

THE most generous giver to charity in the United Kingdom is a ClitheronianI Industrialist John Lancaster has

given a larger percentage of his wealth to charity than anyone else in the UK. The Ultraframe founder topped the

Sunday Times league table at the weekend, with an estimated £6.6m. donated last year. However, the family did hot feature

too highly in the newspaper's Rich List, having slipped 94 places to 345th. "It does not feel any different,"

quipped the Valley man whose for-; tune is now estimated at £38m. less ,

. than this time last year, with £95ml Speaking from Switzerland, he was

dismissive of the Sunday Times Rich List, but found more significant the newspaper's "Generous Givers to Charity". According to the newspaper, the

amount donated to charity represents 6.95% of his wealth. "The Times list is based on what we give to other charities based, on

6.95% of our wealth," he explained this week. "I feel proud th a t we are in

Clitheroe where the charity started.": , Last year, Mr Lancaster was placed 46th in the "Generous Givers" list. By comparison, Lord Sainsbury, 9th in 2002, is at-16th position in 2003, having given £23.6m;j,of his'

£l,500m. wealth to charity, a figure representing 1.58%. v . . .... The Lancaster Foundation was

established in 1997 with Mr and Mrs Lancaster's personal finance from the sale of their shares in Ultraframe. It enabled them to make major capital donations and commitments to char ities, many of which they had been supporting previously, plus many new charities and community needs. At the beginning of the month,

Mrs Rosemary Lancaster was in South Africa representing the Lan caster Foundation at the dedication of a new aircraft hangar for Mission Aviation Fellowship in Lanseria. The Lancaster Hangar can house

recently been completed and is opera tional as a training centre, and signif icant amounts of money have been put aside for the new arts centre, Grand Cinema youth venue and also investment in the town's skatepark redevelopment.

"The charity is now financially ,

up to four aeroplanes active in relief work throughout South Africa. I t also includes the much-needed mainte nance facility that has been sought for many years and operations offices for the 40 staff. . The aircraft, purchased by the

charity, which also finances the ongo ing costs and maintenance, are key to the MA& operations in Southern Africa, covering an area of more than 1,000 square miles into Swaziland and Botswana. They carry medical relief, supporting recognised charities,

pioneering Aids village in South Africa, a resource centre run by the Salvation Army in Soweto township and a TB clinic and school for the deaf in Borama, Somaliland. Here, a new operations centre and

very committed for the future with the maintenance, staffing and run ning costs of these developing pro jects," said Mr Lancaster. "We receive hundreds of letters of

request and would love to be able to meet -every good cause, blit this is impossible. However, people do respect that it is everyone's right to give of their choice without ques

tion." In the Sunday Times Rich List

2003, the accompanying report states that substantial share sales of about £50m. take the Lancaster family to £115m., but the newspaper clipped that figure back to allow for tax and the Lancasters’philanthropy. • Time Computers' founders Tahir

Mohsan and family have fallen from 432nd to 484th with £70m. Former world superbike champion

Carl Fogarty, a Mellor resident, has made his debut at 976th with £30m. Our pictures show Mrs Rosemary
