[HOSE of us living:; in; the vicinity-of Clitheroe's Grand

Cinema are very, disap- pointed with the majority' of councillors who over-- rode the recommendation of the paid professionals. - First, let's get one point

clear. The residents have no fear of the new complex, just concerns. We believe that there are questions which meed answers.

' ?■ ?

. * 0 If the committee meeting ■ minutes had an error about the' wording of . the "refusal",recom- ; mendation, why was this not acknowledged BEFORE the application was heard?

OWhy did the three-minute

ruling not apply, on some watches at least, to Mr Lan- ■ caster? ■ • Why has a site manager

s for a project, until now without planning permission, been in place for approximately two

months? • As Mr John Lancaster

said: "Every effort will be made for the residents.” Why did they hot move the building work proposal three metres backwards? I do not want the reply "unreasonable." The Grand is not in the town

centre, but in a residential area with conservation status. -How- is zinc-coated aluminium in . keeping with the surrounding properties which are stone and

slate? ' Can everyone who is going to

. use the centre guarantee resi-. . dents that they will follow the "zero" parking policy, especial ly those people from towns and cities?

■ Will people, especially

youths full of "high spirits", have ' consideration about "noise" for residents when leav ing?

Why has the Environment-

Directorate said."the rear ser vicing arrangements will s t i l l . form part of the scheme and I.. will still have to object to the

’ redevelopment”? Yes, they are widening the

top of Albion Street, but when using the loading bay it will stop flowing traffic. The rest of the street is still narrow. . My home was one of the fac

tors for the refusal recommen dation. I have a right to light (Ancient Light Act 1832), only I have carried out a light test with a three metre high van

representing the proposed building and the light readings, taken using a Weston Master 2 universal exposure meter, indi cated a significant drop in light. Why have all these factors

been overriden and in some cases ignored by the council lors? No one else has requested a

light test. Why? The inside of my home has a totally different aspect to how it looks from out side and is below street level. The height of my home from street level is 4.1 metres to the eaves. The extension is going to be 9.5 metres to the existing

eaves. * How would you like it? I

hope people will write in to the newspaper with their views.

^" VBradley’s trio of awards includes Cadet of the Year

THREE awards were presented to Ribble Valley Air Cadet Bradley Johnson at a recent presentation din

ner. Bradley (14), of Mellor, received his awards at the

dinner for the Blackburn 1262 Squadron, Air Train

ing Corps. Much to the delight of Ribble Valley Mayor

Coun. Mrs Joyce Holgate, he was presented with an "East Lancashire Wing" trophy for aircraft knowl edge, Blackburn’s 1262 Squadron trophy for drill and discipline and the Squadron's award for Cadet of the

Year. The squadron, based in Blackburn, recruits cadets

for Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndbum and the Ribble Valley area. The cadets learn about military disci-, pline and are taught such subjects as the theory of flight, propulsion, map reading and air navigation - to name just a few. All cadets have the opportunity to take to the air gliding and flying out of Samles- bury and RAF Woodvale. All cadets take part in the Duke of Edinburgh's

Award Scheme, a part of which they take on com munity work, working with such organisations as the

Groundwork Trust.

LOOKING BAGK 100 years ago ’

THE council was considering the matter of pro-. viding new slaughterhouses and ^subcommittee | was formed to look; out fofr suitable sites fpr, |he new'buildings.:.'' ' The "question had been pending for some time

and a settlement was being anxiously looked for- ward to, especially by the inhabitants of Hen- thome district, who had already protested against the houses constituting a nuisance.

' □ The workmen employed by the Highway and

Sewering Committee were entertained to dinner at the New Inn, by the generosity of the Mayor and members of the Corporation. □ Considerable interest was being taken in the

erection of the new village Reading Rooms at Low Moor. It was considered that they would, when completed, serve a useful purpose and there was little doubt that they would be prized by all who

frequented them. , 50 years ago

IMPRESSED by the idea of weekends afloat, Mr Alfred Crook obtained some locally-grown larch and oak, and built a 25ft yacht at his home in Billington. The trim craft, named Hilda, took 18 months of spare time to construct and was sailed around the North West coast by her owner. O For the first time since the war it waspossible

to start a second-year course in cotton manufac- ture.at the Technical School. However, owing to the-lack of recruitment of juvenile labour in the cotton industry during the trade recession, it \yas not possible to start a first-year cotton weaving course or juvenile operatives’ day-release course. . □ The collection of books for troops in Korea |

SOLICITOR Alison Nolan is to head up the family law department a t Forbes Solicitors’ Clitheroe branch, based at Carter House, Castle

Street, Clitheroe. . Ms Nolan, pictured, a mother-of-two, has lived

in the Ribble Valley since she joined the main Blackburn office of Forbes Solicitors in 1990 and t-aVp-; more than 12 years' experience in family law

with her to the Clitheroe branch. Said Ms Nolan: "My role at the Blackburn office

was very varied and it gave me a wide range of experience in family law — including the financial side of divorce and dealing with children disputes. With this move to the Clitheroe branch I will be getting to know a new set of clients and I am very much looking forward to a different set of chal lenges that this role will offer me." Mr Geoffrey Isherwood, partner at the Clitheroe

branch of Forbes Solicitors, welcomed Ms Nolan to the branch and added that having a family law spe cialist within the office would prove invaluable to ; clients.

was terminated by the Clitheroe branch of the United Nations Association. Nearly half-a-ton of books and magazines had been donated by the people of the district and they were thanked by the leader of the association.

PUPILS at Moorland School had the opportunity to see the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in action. A special unit dropped in on them aboard a Wessex helicopter and demonstrated airborne abseiling and a mock air-sea rescue on the playing

fields. ■ : □ The Guider-in-Charge at Waddow Hall was ■*".i‘I L “■ ;

the guest a t the 31st charter dinner of the Clitheroe Soroptimist Club. Speaking on the prob lems of and pressures on young people, she said that the aims of both the Guide Movement and Soroptimists was to encourage young people to make the most of the opportunities at their dis posal to become useful, responsible citizens. . D Although the "Operation Books" campaign

had collected over 4,000 items, more were still , needed. The collection had been started in 1973 by the Hodder branch of the Royal British Legion and it was decided to extend its appeal to the whole of the Ribble Valley. The books were being sent to British forces serving in Northern Ireland.
