Views on six terms

PARENTS throughout the Ribble Valley are being asked for their views on proposals to move to a six- term school year. Lancashire County

Council is launching a two month consultation into the proposals which are intended to raise educa tional standards by offer ing a predictable and stan dardised timetable for the school year. Views are being sought

from anyone with an inter est in education before December 6th. The proposals have been

put together by the Local Government Association. Councils across the coun try are looking to move towards a standard school year consisting of six terms which, it is felt, will improve the running of schools. The council is also con

sidering whether term pat terns in Burnley and Pen- dle should be brought into line with the rest of Lan cashire. Terms there have traditionally been based around the time when local mills closed for holi days. Copies of the consulta

tion document are avail able from the Tourism Information : Centre, Clitheroe, schools and Clitheroe Library.

alarm, in Peel Street, Clitheroe. ' The call came in as the Mayor

talked with the "part-time, but by no means amateur" team of fire fighters on drill night a t the Princess Way station. : "It is very easy to take the skill and commitment of the fire-fight

ers for granted," says the Mayor.- "They put in a lot of time and effort, not to mention the dangers they sometimes face. "Even ordinary fires can pose a

serious threat to personal safety, and these days there are many special service calls as well."

The Mayor was impressed by.

the range and quality of the equipment available to team members. "Now I have visited the station

and seen the swift response to a call I will never take the fire ser vice for granted," says the Mayor.
