Hotel plan for a house in Barrow is deferred

A PLAN to convert Audley House, Whalley Road, Barrow, into a hotel has been deferred for a time. Members of the Ribble Valley Bor

bouring authorities mingled with charity fund-raisers, represen-■ tatives of the police- councillors, church leaders and the local community, while schoolchildren enjoyed their own practical his tory lesson the follow ing day, courtesy of town elders. On Friday, residents were invited to see the town council regalia for themselves, with invitation by tick et in advance. The Mayoral "At

Homes" are always one of the highlights of the town Mayor's year of office and last week's events were no excep tion. Mayor Coun. Mrs Mary Robinson and her Consort, husband Mr David Robinson, enj oyed every moment and took the various oppor tunities to say a person al thank you to those who have supported them during their first year of office. The "At Homes" took

place in the Mayor's Parlour within the Church Street premises, its walls dominated by

Mike Kirby wondered if a suggested condition about specific extra plan ning permission being required if ever a function room was proposed was strong enough. It was felt that such a room might

cause problems. "We want to make sure that the condition about it closes any loopholes," said Mr Kirby. "We want it to become more watertight." He said that there were to be no

physical alterations to convert the house. The car parking arrangements had received no objections from the county surveyor. The final approval can be issued by

A SPRING gala ball organised by the Friends Association of Clitheroe Royal Grammar School raised

£3,200. The fund-raising event held at Gisbum's Stirk House Hotel over the weekend

attracted 170 guests. The aim of the ball, the first event of its

kind to be organised by the association, was to raise money to replace the curtains

in the main hall at the school's Chatburn

Road site. An auction and raffle helped boost the

total made at the dinner dance to £3,200, a figure beyond all expectations. The evening proved to be such a success that organisers are planning to hold anoth

er ball next year. Coun. John Hill, chairman of the Friends Association, said: "There is a per

ception that grammar schools such as Clitheroe, where there are high academic achievement rates, are not short of money and that is not the case. I would like to pay tribute to the Friends for raising this money and to thank Stirk House for its hospitality." Our photograph shows some of the

guests who enjoyed the spring gala ball. (P9302/H)
