of ghost walks I WAS grateful for Tim Procter's article featuring one of the little storms which from time to time trouble Whalley's teacup. I would be glad for the oppor

tunity to add a further com

ment. . I count Simon Entwistle as a

friend, and I am an admirer of the ghost walks. They bring valuable attention to the tourism potential of Whalley and have an element of education as well as being enor mous fun. They do not glorify the occult,

to the ghost walks - with or with out young assistants - passing through the churchyard, where I know that Simon takes the time to point out some of its finer fea tures. Our only objection to the ghost

streets and roads in Clitheroe, which are full of potholes, these stretches of road are by compari son near perfect. We have again reached that time of year when the council tax

to be levied is assessed, with all the attendant handwringing and excuses offered by local council lors that, though the increase is well above the inflation rate, it is not really their fault, but the Gov ernment's. Whether their claim that the

out of helping ON my way to Manchester, last Saturday with five teenagers, I found myself at the M65 round about with a flat rear tyre. Within five minutes of getting

the children out of the car and wrestling with the spare, a man pulled up to offer his help. He not only changed the tyre, but refilled the spare which was low and put two hubcaps on! He brushed aside my effusive

happy for the ghost walks to con tinue to stop outside the Abbey gate. I do hope the parish council

walks entering the Abbey grounds is that there are so many more positive features with which we would wish the Abbey to be asso ciated in people's minds. Regular guided tours offered by our Whal ley "monks” focus upon these. Strictly speaking, the cobbled

contribution from central govern ment is not what it should be, I don't know, but the money spent on services is under the direct con trol of these councillors, so per haps for once we can have an hon est explanation of the justifica tion for spending significant sums of money on these apparently unnecessary road works.

FOR some time Mr Charles Jepsdn, a teacher a t Oakhill College in Whalley, had a vision tO|turn p a r t of the mixed woodland in the col lege grounds into a

nature trail. Now that vision is a

reality and the! new nature trail and Kata- mavik was officially opened by local MP, Mr Nigel Evans, in the com pany of Coun. | Mrs Gwen Pye, Mayor of the Ribble Valley and: vari ous local guests, i Blessed by Father P.

trail is due to the many volunteers who have helped with its construc tion - the River Mersey Basin authority supplied expertise and some labour to help construct

the bridges and path ways; Castle Cement kindly donated the stones for the paths along with labour and machinery to create the walkways; and many local helpers gave up a lot of their spare time over the past year to the project. The nature trail is not only for the use of

Oakhill’s children, but is available to other local schools for nature, pond and stream studies, as well as the general public who can access it from Wiswell Lane. Pictured is Ribble Val

ley's Mayor, MP and Mr Phillip Mahon, principal of Oakhill College at the opening of the nature trail.

Rail chief aims for a better service

THE tradition of attracting key indus try figures to their annual dinner was maintained by mem bers of train enthusi asts group Ribble Valley Rail. ; At this year's event,

held at Mitton Fold Hotel, Langho, 52 guests listened as Mr Dave Kaye, managing director of First North Western Trains, spoke of his Manchester team's efforts to better the performance levels of previous years. Included in the audi

ence was Mr Tim Clarke, the zone director of Railtrack North

(28), formerly of Airdrie Crescent, Burnley, and Daniel Charles Thomas (27), formerly of Old Stone Trough Lane, Kel- brook, admitted stealing groceries worth £216 from Sainsbury's, Clith eroe, and asked for a sim- ilar £119 offence at Tesco to be taken into consideration. Shapcott admitted

stealing three cam corders from Harry Gar- lick Ltd and Thomas admitted handling them. The court heard that a

member of staff a t a fourth store, Wool-

worths, saw Shapcott acting suspiciously there, followed her out, and saw her take the cameras from Garlick's window display. The car then left an alleyway. Mr Philip Turner

(defending) said that heroin was the reason for the couple starting to offend in their mid-20s. Both had held respon

sible positions in a busi ness owned by Thomas' father but after taking recreational drugs they were reduced to commit ting offences to fund their habit. The couple were now

both in a rehabilitation unit a t Sheffield and making good progress. The magistrates

imposed a community rehabilitation order for a year on both defendants and ordered each to pay £35 costs. The couple were told that the penal ty reflected the fact they they had recognised their problem and taken action to address it.
