A- MAN who will-be remembered as a true gentleman and who devoted much of his life to ensuring everyrae could share; his.passion for th e . great"outdoors has died suddenly nn hol

iday in Viethhm'..-?, Mr Frank Parrott

(72) was never happier. than when he was admir-:' ing distant views from.a' iriountain top, encourag ing others to indulge in his passion of cross country ski-ihg in the Austrian Alps or study

ing maps planning his TIOvf" f-f-olr Whether in the Ribble

Valley, his beloved Alps or much further afield, Mr Parrott (pictured) was extremely knowl edgeable about his beloved countryside and, as initially a footpaths inspector and latterly area footpaths secretary for the Ramblers' Associ ation, knew and regular ly walked many miles of Ribble Valley routes. In recent years he had

been dogged by poor health but, despite numerous operations which eventually meant

the end of his long-dis tance walking and ski ing, he would regularly ride his bicycle into town from his home on the outskirts of Chtheroe. With his wife, Mrs

Pat Parrott, he had, planned this month's' holiday in Vietnam and was-' enthusiastically , looking forward to exploring a new country. Returning home yester day,‘Mrs Parrott said her husbaiid had been thoroughly enjoying his holiday and his last words had been, "tpday's been a good day, tomor row looks like being bet ter." It was not to be. He suffered a massive heart attack in the early hours. A Mancunian, Mr

Parrott was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Manchester University. As a young man he enjoyed athlet ics, particularly running, tennis,' mountaineering and rock climbing and was an active member of his Scout organisation. Later, he also helped the Clitheroe Grammar School Scouts in a num ber of ways, teaching dinghy sailing which was another keen interest.

and accompanying the troop on holidays. He also played an active role in the school's walking club, 'IThe Tramps," regularly taking pupils on walks, to the'Dales, the Lakes and occasion- allyNorth Wales. .He had a lifelong pas

sion for classical music arid enjoyed dancing. After qualifying as a dentist, he jumped at the chance to practise in. the rural Ribble Valley. He spent 32 years in

the York Street practice of Bowker and Parrott, much of that time in partnership with Mr Kenneth Bowker. A former president of

Association, he was often called upon to give advice to members preparing to trek over seas, particularly in the Alps, where, with his wife, he was completely at home and had acted as a inountain ^ide for a local specialist tour operator.

Those'associated with ' ^

DalesRail and Burnley Mountaineering Club, two more organisations he enjoyed spending time with, were among the many shocked to hear of Mr Parrott's sud den death this week. A father of four;

the North-'West branch of the British Dental Association, he served on the Lancashire Family Practitioner Committee. His commitment to

the countryside led him to take a post as a volun tary warden with the Yorkshire Dales Nation al Park, as well as becoming a footpaths inspector and, at the time of his death, area footpath secretary. A founder member and for mer chairman of the Clitheroe Ramblers'

make a lot of money out of it. I tried to tell him I don't think he has a hope in hell of winning. It could take eight to 10 years. How much money are they going to rack up in that time? Mrs England said that

Mr Wilson had told her he was surprised at the reaction from people they called on. "He said he was sur
