CHURCHES were filled as Sunday was very properly devoted in many places of worship to rejoicing and allu sions with thankfulness that peace in South Africa had at last been secured, and was being proclaimed everywhere as a matter of national thanksgiving.
□ The St Mary's branch of the
' Church Lads' Brigade was represented by six members at the Brigade's Coro nation Review by the Prince and Princess of Wales, which was held on Horse Guards Parade.
D The weather was, to say the least,,
unseasonal. Fr Sidgreaves, Professor of Astronomy a t Stonyhurst College, reported that the temperature on the Monday was 42 degrees Fahrenheit (5.5C) at the thermometer, which was 4ft 7ins above the ground, but that the temperature on the grass was 30.7. degrees F(-1C).

THE Rector of St James's Church said that a certain amount of snobbery, obviously connected with the question of a grammar school education, caused unhappiness and it would be better both for parents and children if it were overcome or dropped. He said that the grammar school selection exam was a good one, but that children should not be "crammed" by ambitious parents.

O A 23-year-old New Yorker, Miss

Elizabeth Wheeler, realised an ambi tion when she completed an ascent of Pendle Hill. Her interest in the area stemmed from her attendance at a school in' the USA, built in the memory of George Fox, founder of the Quakers and which was called Pendle Hill.
□ Chatburn motor-cyclist Mr
Bernard Hargreaves also realised a dream when he won the Senior Club man's T.T. Race in the Isle of Man. Riding a Triumph Tiger 100 loaned to him by his club, he averaged 82.45 mph over the four laps, his fastest being 83.05, almost breaking the course records-. Despite the loss of a hub nut and the tachometer shearing from its mounting and banging about in his face for most of the 150 miles, he was in front all the way

THE streets of Clitheroe were trans formed into one gigantic Silver Jubilee party as the biggest ever Torchlight Procession made its colourful, noisy and hilarious way through the town. It was reported that the event would be remembered for years to come as one of the proudest and happiest nights in the town's long and illustrious history. Bonfires and the sports festival added to the celebrations, which were topped off by a glittering firework display from the Castle.
□ The fire brigade was kept busy during the morning after the procession
as four blazes kept the men battling for 12 hours. One fireman who had dressed up for the festivities had gone to sleep too tired to change his clothes and rushed out when the first alarm went off, still wearing his wife's tights.
□ The Vicar of St Leonard's, Lang-
ho, strongly criticised the Government declaration tha t May 1st would be made a national holiday from 1978. He said that Whit Monday was a far more appropriate-day for a holiday, not "Labour Day."
