“STAR WARS EPISODE II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES" (PG); Grand Cinema, Clitheroe; from tomorrow

TEN years after “The Phantom Menace” threatened the planet Naboo, Padme Amilada (Natal ie Portman) is now a senator and is representing her home world. A faction of political sepa

ratists, led by County Dooku, attempts to assassinate her. There are not enough Jedi to

defend the Republic against the threat, so Chancellor Palpatine enlists the aid of Jango Fett, who promises that his army of

clones will handle the situation for them. Meanwhile Obi-Wan Kenobi

(Ewan McGregor) continues to train the young Jedi Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Chris tensen), who fears the Jedi code will forbid his growing romance with Amidala, whom he is now in charge of protecting. The fifth instalment of Lucas's

work far outstrips “The Phan tom Menace”, in terms of the characters, effects and storyline. The first correct answer to the

question on the coupon will win a family ticket for a forthcoming film at the Grand Cinema, Clitheroe.

West can judge that for them selves when the play arrives at

the Charter Theatre, in Preston, for a four-night run from June 26th. # Outrageously, and in true "Is

nothing sacred?" fashion, the advance notices for this new production say the show "explores deep meaningful theo logical topics, which include 'Was Jesus a good carpenter?', 'Did Adam and Eve have navels?' and even tackles the question 'Did Moses really look like Charlton Heston?"' The production gallops all the

way from Eve to Exodus, taking in the Epistles, the Apostles, Gospels, fig leaves and even the final judgement on the way.

A ‘Choice’ ballet treat played out

HOBSON’S CHOICE; Lyric Theatre, Salford Quays; until Saturday

A HEART-WARMING come dy ballet looks set to provide a treat for lovers of dance. Birmingham Royal Ballet is

dancing one of choreographer David Bintley's biggest hits - "Hobson's Choice" - at the Lyric Theatre, Salford Quays, until Saturday. Based on Harold Brighouse's

play, the ballet tells the rags-to- riches story of bootmaker Will Mossop, whose talent could take him far -

push him in the right direction. Then along comes Maggie

Hobson, who is learning to play by the rules - and win - in a man's world. The story unfolds in magnificent settings designed by Hayden Griffin.

Sadness behind the laughter in this very clever comedy

"DEAD FUNNY"; Octa gon Theatre, Bolton

T E R R Y Johnson's play is just what its title suggests, very funny indeed. The action takes place on

the night Benny Hill died and, a week later, on the night Frankie Howerd died. I t shows how the deaths affect the Dead Funny Soci ety, Islington branch, espe cially chairman Richard (John Banks), consultant obstetrician and less-than- loving husband of Ellie (Sherry Baines), who is des

perate to revive their sex-life and have a baby. Wednesday evenings

should be free for their sex exercises, but Richard's fellow members meet to mourn; dressed as Benny Hill charac ters. Nick (Nicholas Lane) is a

nerdy teacher with a dim wife Lisa (Fiona Wass) and "sad old git" Brian (Robin Hoop er) does an impersonation of Fred Scuttle, one of Hill's famous characters. Ellie is not impressed, and her disap proval makes them funnier. There are funny take-offs

of Hill's routines, plus some of Morecambe and Wise's. However, there is sadness behind the laughter and all have secrets revealed in a reworking of the custard pie routine. There was a warning the

play contains strong lan guage and male nudity. There were some swear words, but the nudity was the funniest I have seen for a while with the ludicrous sight of a man naked except for socks and suspenders. This is a cleverly- written tragi-comedy. PIPPA MUNRO
