TALENTED squash play ers in Clitheroe may have to'

.look beyond the Ribble Val ley if they wish to continue

playing the sport. Clitheroe Squash Club has

been rocked by the news that the two squash‘courts in Hicks Health and Rackets Club - the only courts in the town - are to be closed down at the end of next month. Officials of the club have

been trying desperately to find an alternative venue and were in discussions with Clitheroe Rugby Club to build two new courts on the site of the club house. However, planning per

mission for the courts has been rejected by Ribble Valley Bor

ough Council. But the club is hoping the

council has a change of heart. Clitheroe Squash Club

chairman Martin Hill said: “Our main objective is to retain Clitheroe’s tradition of providing squash facilities in

the town. “To succeed, the club is

looking to work in collabora tion with Ribble Valley Bor ough Council to achieve this

aim “We are trying to show the

council that there is a need for

squash. “ Over the last 27 years,

squash has been provided for privately. The council has

Jonathan’s adventure

CLITHEROE canoe ace Jonathan

Schofield was in impressive form at the Wild Water Racing Senior World Championship at

ValSesia in Italy. Making his debut for

the senior Great Britain team, 17-year-old Jonathan achieved a superb 27th overall and recorded the second- best time of the GB team, only beaten by Mike Mason by 0.28

seconds. The race was won by

Frenchman Boris Saunier who just edged out local favourite Robert Pontarolla - much to the disappointment of the home crowd. Seisa is an alpine

river, a short journey from Milan and close to. the highest natural park in Europe - the Alta ValSesia. The water levels were

high for the sprint race Jonathan was

competing in, but his split times were very fast and he managed to finish 23rd overall after

the end of race one. Unfortunately, in race two, he lost 1.5 seconds due to the sheer weight of water counting against his youth. Jonathan and two

other members of the senior GB team are now in Austria preparing for the Wild Water World Cup races at Mayrhofen in the Tirol this weekend. Thp Clitheroe Royal ' Grammar School pupil

is being helped and supported by his coach Jon Royle, who is going out to join him in Austria with the British Junior Kayak team. Jonathan’s dad Peter

said: “This will be invaluable experience and preparation for the junior World Championships being held in the UK at Bala, North Wales, next month.”

never had to dig into it’s own pocket but we are hoping they will try and help us continue to provide squash.” The rugby club is set to,-

receive a windfall of several , thousands of pounds due to , house builders—Barratt Man chester Ltd - requiring part of the rugby club’s land to build a road through to an housing estate. The rugby club is set to use

some of the money on redevel oping their clubhouse and were willing to help Clitheroe Squash Club by building two

new courts. Mr Hill added: “We have

100 squash players'ahd that is: far bigger than any rugby or cricket club.”

Vice-chairman of the club

John Meadows also said: “It is vital for both current squash

.players and for the develop ment of the sport among juniors that we have a sustain able facility in the town.” The club’s junior boys’ team

has recently won the North West Junior Championships in Manchester while Clitheroe also boasts international play ers' such as Nigel Willis and Sue Meadows.

. Mr Meadows added: “We

are urgently and and actively looking for a site for the new courts and ways to finance the

project. “We will welcome support,, . v i f ’,!

from any local organisation that want to develop sporting

opportunities for local people. We are particularly keen to develop a strong junior sec- tion.

- “Ideally, the new club would combine with another sports 'club. The courts could be built next to new or existing facili

ties. “The all-year round income

generated by squash can be used to pay for sharing facili ties like the changing rooms

and bar.” If anyone is interested in

joining the new club, or has any ideas, they can contact either Martin Hill (01200

,'422634) or John Meadows I. (01200 428054, home, or 01254 391411, work).

■ Big grant awarded to Shawbridge club

Blues’ delight at £25,000 booster

POSTPONED games should be, a thing of the past at Shaw-

by the Football Stadia Improve ment Fund and will go towards installing a pitch drainage system. Clitheroe have suffered for a

number of seasons from poor, drainage, including a period of three months last season when the pitch was virtually unplayable. More than £35m has already

been invested by the FSIF since it’s launch in July 2000. They have funded lower league ground improvements throughout the professional and amateur game, creating a safe and modern envi

the mid-point in .this year's Stan dard Life North West Seniors’ Golf League the competition , seems to be wide open with any of three of four teams being able to stake a claim for the title. While Burnley look the

favourites with three straight wins, having dropped just one match in 18, all'of their games have been played:with home advantage. De Vere head the table with 11

points and their excellent away draw at Nelson could mean that they will be challenging for the

title. ••■.•• However Ingol Golf Club, Pre-. ■ >

ston, are the only team to have actually won an away game, hav ing defeated De Vere in a surprise

opening game. ' Previous league winners Wilp-

shire have dropped just one game, and that was away, from home to

DeVere. While defending champions

Longridge would seem to have lit tle chance at this stage, having gleaned just three points from their opening six games, it should be noted that five of. those games were away fixtures.-
