. ' r ’‘ Writer’s way of saying a special thank-you
LOCAL au th o r Mrs Linda Sawley has given £135 from
the sales of her books to each of the two charities involved with children. Mrs Sawley is a founder
member of the Ribble Valley Ladies' Luncheon Club and
gave one cheque to the club for its child cancer fund. The other went to Derian
House Children's Hospice. Mrs Sawley, a university lec
turer in child nursing, has sold more than 500 copies of her first book, “Everyone Else's Children”.
which features a locally-based centuries flashback theme, “A Ring in Time”, is also selling well. .
Now a novel she has written, "Bringing out the books has '
been a rewarding task and I have been very encouraged by people's reaction.

"It is hoped th a t the
project will .make a sig nificant impact on dis abled participation lev els which, because of geography and the lack, of special schools within the borough, are some of the lowest in the coun ty," writes Director of Commercial Services Mr John Heap. The key areas to be
focused on include research into the current situation, identification of the key barriers to participation, improved awareness, better com munication, establish ment of a disability

th a t consideration should be given to find ing ways of: I • Providing extracur
ricular opportunities in the activities tha t chil dren are introduced to at school and are thus more likely to wish to contin ue to take part in. • Making activities
inore accessible to girls. ® Making leisure cen
tre programmes more attractive, accesssible and inclusive. - Levels of extracurricu
more work is needed to reduce inequalities in provision for girls. How ever, there are no gender differences in sports club' membership and atten dance at a regular organ- ised session. Overall, the survey
has shown tha t partici pation in extracurricular a r ts activities and the
■arts for fun is higher th an . average. Arts involvement is on aver age said to be higher than sport. But the fig ure for participation for fun is lower than the cor responding figure for sport. In contrast to sport,
girls have significantly higher levels of involve
ment than boys. Participation in arts
as a p a r t of a group is lowest in the area of Bowland and Newton. The value of a r ts
would appear to be seen as less tangible to most youg people and thus better promotion of its benefits is required. One finding was that
lar p a rticipation and participation in sport for both pleasurable reasons and for fitness levels are
ju s t under half the young people in the Rib ble Valley feel uncom fortable in a theatre or gallery.
