Miserable weekend Townsend tops field for Clitheroe CC in the Euro Trophy
CLITHEROE slipped to two defeats at the weekend - to opposi tion from either end of the Jenning Ribbles-
dale League table. On Saturday, Neil
Bolton's side were bowled out 70 runs short of the victory tar get
set by
Barnoldswick, who returned to the top of the table after taking all seven points at Chat- burn Road! Barlick professional
Clinton Peake was the star of the show as he carried his bat through
the innings as Barnoldswick posted
188-7. The Australian pro
faced 126 balls and fin ished just five runs short of a well deserved century. :
He was given able :
support from Matthew Nutter, who hit another accomplished knock of
45. He joined his profes
sional at the crease in the seventh over after Ian Scothern had been caught by wicketkeeper Simon Coulter off Neil Bibby for five. Nutter fired three
sixes and helped his pro fessional take the score from 26 to 132, before he was tempted out of his ground by Clitheroe professional Dexter Fit- ton and was stumped by Coulter. The rest of the innings was an aDoui.
ll bout.
Peake as only one other batsman managed to get into double figures. The Aussie cracked 11
boundaries and one maximum hit as the vis itors posted a sizeable 188-7. Clitheroe were never
in the game in reply as they went from 4-3 to 29-6, with the wickets shared about between Mick Scothern, Paul Beech and Peake. Mark Bolton gave the
home supporters some thing to cheer.about with a quick-fire half- century. His 67 runs came off
just 79 balls and includ ed six boundaries and two sixes. However, he was
given very little support as Peake rounded off a superb individual per formance by collecting a five-wicket haul as Clitheroe were eventual ly dismissed for 119 in
the 39th over. The following day
Clitheroe succumbed to next-bottom Edenfield at Chatburn Road, as the Gincroft Lane side rounded off a rare dou ble-header success after victory over Padiham the previous day. But it was tight as
the visitors completed a seven-over win off the
last ball. ' Clitheroe again strug
gled with the bat after taking first knock, being dismissed for 113 off the final ball. Skipper Bolton
. omppci
departed for only four, falling to Edenfield pro fessional Ian Mitchell, and there was a further- blow when Fitton hand ed Storey a return catch
for just five. Without their profes
sional and skipper, opener Stephen Bishop tried manfully to resur rect the innings with Andy Burns, before the latter was bowled by Bulcock for 11. Once Bishop departed
for 27, Bulcock again hitting the stumps, only brothers Simon and Matt Coulter could get into double figures, both scoring 18, and Bibby was run out off the last ball as the innings was wrapped up for 113. The Clitheroe attack
bowled tightly in reply, without getting their reward. Openers Senneck and
Williams were finally seperated after a solid opening stand when Bibby had the latter snapped up by. Graham Kershaw for 21. Fitton had Storey (5),
stumped by Simon Coulter, and Senneck was then bowled by the former Lancashire man
for 34. But Mitchell (14 not
out) and Burns (22 not out) . slowly edged towards the victory tar-: get, anjl managed to snatch a dramatic last-
ball success. Clitheroe are at title
chasing Cherry Tree on Saturday.

THE Clitheroe and
•District Snooker L e a gu e ’s Annual General Meeting has been scheduled for early next month.
The meeting will be
held at the Catholic Social Centre on Thursday) September 5th, commencing at 7- 30 p.m.
JUDGING by Clitheroe’s line up for their latest pre-season friendly on Tuesday night,; manager Lee Sculpher is look ing to go all-out attack ,this
season. The Blues boss started with six out-and-out attackers in his line
up in their 4-1 friendly win over last season’s North West Coun ties’ Second Division stragglers
Castleton Gabriels. However, defensive lynchpin
Sculpher has not converted the side to Total Football, he was just giving his forwards some much needed match practice! ' He explained: “ I decided to play Neil Spencer in midfield simply because he hasn’t played yet and I knew he would do a lot more running in midfield. “ But when you look at it, I
had six forwards in the four mid- field positions and two striking roles on Tuesday. “ So we should have scored a
few!” One of those forwards Lee
Cryer opened the scoring when he headed home after a great centre from Gary Jackson - another striker - early in the
match. The Blues increased their lead
shortly before half-time when Spencer played a couple of neat one-twos before releasing Jack- son, who blasted the ball into the bottom corner. The home side pulled a goal
back 15 minutes into the second half hut the two-goal cushion was restored soon after when a
■ free-kick from the right was ■ played to attacking left-sided
player Paddy Lauber, who volleyed home from the edge of
the box. The scoring was rounded-off
when Jackson got his second. The young forward raced clear, and his initial effort was parried by the keeper only for him to ram home the rebound. On Saturday, Clitheroe record
ed a morale boosting 2-1 victory over a tough Padiham outfit at theArbories. , The Storks who scored first,
but Clitheroe equalised 10 min utes before half-time when a cor ner was deflected into his own net by a Padiham defender. The winning goal arrived in
the second half from Richard Fogarty, who headed home from a corner at the back post. The Blues have one final pre
season friendly before their first league game of the season on Saturday week against Prescot Cables. They travel to UniBond League Premier Division outfit Accrington Stanley in two days
time. Sculpher added: “Everybody’s
doing pretty well. We have played quite well in the games up
to now. “We’ve had some mixed sides
out but the main thing is that everybody gets some match fit ness.
“We are carrying some . . ,
injuries. Gary Rishton and Stu art Todhunter are still carrying knocks. I’m hoping they will be fit for this Saturday but it’s look
ing doubtful.” Sculpher is also unconcerned
that his side have yet to play on their own ground in pre-season. The pitch at Shawbridge, of course, underwent some major

better than what it was, so, hope fully, it will be in good shape come a week on Saturday. “ I don't think it will be a prob
lem. It’s not as though its a dif ferent type of turf or surface. . “But apart from the two new signings, everybody knows how to play on Shawbridge. “ Obviously, if we had made
quite a few new signings and with the. slope of the pitch, etc., then it might have taken a little bit of getting used to.
, “But I am not worried that we
won’t have played bn Shawbridge before the opening day of the
season.” • Clitheroe Supporters Club
