years. Owner Mr John Kelsey, of Tottington, near B u r y ,
said the •
‘ 1958 model was originally brought into this country a year after its manufacture by a Dutchman who was studying at Cambridge University. For many years it was owned
by a man living in the Altrin cham area, and when he died it moved to Bury and was bought ’ by Mr Kelsey three years ago.
RARE Mercedes Benz 190SL open two-seater will be visiting the show
"It has been fully restored
over the years and has done under 50,000 miles since new," said Mr Kelsey. He said the light metallic
blue was the original colour. Although it was not the original paintwork, it was the same fac tory specification. Mr Kelsey said that probably
only around 500 Mercedes of that model were imported in total over the years and only a handful in top condition remained. In the 1950s only about 500 Mercedes a year of all types
came into Britain. "I do about 1,000 miles a year in it, mainly to events,” said Mr Kelsey, a former project engineer in the power industry who is now
retired “On a nice summer's day it is
lovely to drive with the top
down." He is the owner of another
classic Mercedes and also has a Merc as his everyday car. "They are a very practical car
to run. “People tend to be a little bit
scared of them but they need not be," he said.

All the competitors will themselves by Stephen Canavan Officials and members, together with
members of the Rotary Club of Burnley and staff from East Lancashire Newspa pers, have been working very hard to ensure that this year’s event is another big success. Car fans are revving their motors in
anticipation of another fantastic day out at Towneley Park and, with more than 200 cars on display, the thousands of visi tors who flock to the event are in for a treat. This year there are going to be special
displays from the Morris Minor Owners’ Club and the MG Owners’ Club, and a whole range of other classic British, American and European cars. The famous Thwaites shire horses are
also making an appearance and are sure to be a big hit with the many families who visit the show.
choose the best car in show on the day, and there will be a car chosen by guest of hon our the Mayor of Burnley, Coun. Gordon Birtwistle, and his wife the Mayoress, Kathleen. Prizes will also be awarded to cars from
each individual category. There is going to be a mouthwatering
selection of hot dogs, burgers, drinks and ice creams, that should keep the hunger pangs at bay. Local motor dealers are also once again
putting on displays of new vehicles and there will be plenty of, opportunities to peruse the new models and see how you like the modern look. The event is in aid of charity and
promises to be a great summer day outl Our picture shows Rotary Club secretary Mr Jack Keogh (left) and PDRA chair man Mr David Roscoe with the East Lan cashire Newspapers motoring team, left to right: Helen Foulds, Janine Cunningham and Tania Stephenson, (s)
