can be localised and dif ficult to predict, the Environment Agency is urging people to be pre pared by putting flood plans in place. The Agency uses a
Flood Watch scheme to provide general warnings for all rivers and surface water flooding over a geographical area when heavy rain is expected. Although efforts are made to issue early
warnings, in a bid to give people as much time as possible to protect them selves arid their homes, some rivers do rise too quickly. As a result the Envi
ronment Agency is urg ing those who may be affected to follow its flood advice. As well as making up flood kits which contain emer gency contact numbers, a torch, gumboots and first aid kit, it suggests that residents get into the habit of storing valu able items in high places and join its flood warn ing service. If heavy rain makes
flooding likely people should move their cars to higher ground and use sandbags to block door ways.
