RIBBLESDALE WANDERERS
Howard turned things around with a fine stand of 76 in 17 overs. Both batsmen timed the ball well and batted with great purpose. . • - " • ■ -
- They saw off openers Ata-ur-
Howard was the backbone behind Wanderers sizeable total of 207-5. The runs were scored ■ at such a rate that skipper Terry';' Braithwaite was able to declare ;’ and claim1 the remaining four overs to bowl Northern out. . The locals only required one of those exiya overs as Northern
. were dismissed foi; 162. A day. later, it was the turn of
, the bowlers to shine as Whalley were routed for just 69 with Howard and Ian Britcliffe tak ing threewickets apiece.
Rehman and Neil Weaver, but it was Butt who made the next break-through as Hall was caught'at mid-off for 43. ■, At 98-3.off 23 overs, Martin •
: Briggs joined Howard, who was ; ■now in full flow dispatching nine fours and a six in his 63 before falling to a catch by
Mel.Gilli-• brand off Fish.1.- : • . Briggs and Ryan Gladwin increased the run rate adding 56 in just seven overs; .the latter bowled by Rehman for 29 off 21 .balls,
'
• Ribblesdale knocked off . the winning runs inside 27 overs but • they didn’t have things all their own way as they lost seven wickets. On Saturday, Braithwaite
returned from injury to skipper the side and after winning the toss, he elected to bat first on a very wet wicket. He must have been having
second thoughts about his deci sion because professional Shahid Nawaz was adjudged leg before for four and Martin Peel was caught behind for the same score. Craig Hall and the in-form
•■'•■ ■;
Briggs remained unbeaten on 40 which came off 44 balls as
. Northern were set a sizeable 208 for victory. In reply, the home side made
a steady start but it was Nawaz who .made the first break through trapping Daud leg before for 16 in the 9th over. Britcliffe accounted for the
dangerous Butt, caught behind by Phillip Hall for eight at 34-2. - Chambers batted a long time for his 18 before chancing a run to Briggs whose quick pick-up and throw to Nawaz sealed his fate.
Howard replaced the pro and
wreaked havoc as he seamed the ball both ways. Dangerman Neil Weaver was his first victim
Whalley lose out to bottom side
WHALLEY suffered a hugely disappointing defeat to bottom side Oswaldtwistle Immanuel at Station Road on Saturday. The locals handed struggling Immanuel only
their third win of the season after being bowled out for a paltry 66, chasing the visitors' 135-7. : And had it not been for John Kearsley, who finished unbeaten on 21, it would have been a lot worse. Immanuel took first knock and professional Rob Ashton and Burton gave the Hyndbum side
a solid start. First change bowler Simon Gorton made the
breakthrough, bowling the amateur for 22, and Immanuel then endured a collapse as Lee Burgess ripped through the top order. He saw off Sadiq (3), Payne'(l) and Gerald Metcalf (10), while Dave O'Neill had P. Dignan
snapped up by Martin Davies without scoring. Duxbury was run out for just five, but Ashton

Mixed time for title hopefuls
A CATALOGUE of low scores was the story of Read’s double header weekend in the Jennings Ribblesdale
League.- On a sun-soaked Saturday, Read
, cantered to victory by six wickets after skittling Baxenden for just 54. However, a day later, it was Read’s
turn to struggle with the bat as they were dismissed for just 71 by Oswaldtwistle Immanuel. However, the weather came to
Read’s aid as heavy showers prevented the home side from going out to bat. On Saturday, Read won the toss and
inserted the visitors. First to depart was professional

Mark Rishton for nought and then had Sam Reidy - son of former Lan cashire player Bernard Reidy - caught behind for a duck. Skipper Simon Payne followed in
similar fashion while Andy Holroyd was dismissed by home pro Akram Raza, this time to a brilliant one-hand ed catch by Michael Whalley at short
leg. Peter Usher gave Barden his fifth
wicket with a loose stroke to the wick etkeeper and Raza mopped up the tail as Baxenden were howled out for a meagre 52.
The intrusive clouds made life diffi
cult for the Read batsmen as the ball swung prodigiously, as well as bounc ing high.. . Soon, opener Terry Little played a ball on to his stumps , attempting an expansive back-foot forcing shot. Number three batsman Joey Mar
shall was beaten once or twice outside the off-stump so resorted to attacking and slashed two boundaries over slips to the vacant third man area. ■ He then savagely pulled Harvey to
mid-wicket and the left-handed Bones then bowled Raza with an unplayable inswinging yorker second ball. Stand-in skipper Walton adopted a

which made driving a dangerous proposition. Some batsmen were beat en by balls which kept very low. Australian Rob Ashton bowled five successive maidens and finished with

finished with two wickets for 16 runs. The only bright spark for Read was
the last wicket stand of 27 between Qadeer Ahmed who top-scored with 20 and Barden.
Cup final joy for Salesbury
SALESBURY emerged victorious in the Jen nings Lawrenson Cup Final after beating rivals Ribblesdale Wan derers seconds by eight wickets. Chasing 117-9, Sales
bury passed the target with, just two wickets down, to take the trophy. The day before, Sales
bury went into the final on a high after beating Rolls-Royce by 49 runs. Salesbury restricted
their opponents to 97-9, in reply to their first innings total of 146-8. Wanderers’ weekend
got off to a disappointing start with a one-wicket defeat against Burnley Belvedere. Ribblesdale were all
out for 76, but came mighty close to defend ing that total, before the Holden Road side held on to win. Clitheroe seconds lost
out on run rate to Barnoldswick after rain affected their game. The Chatburn Road-

suffered their worst defeat of the season to date, losing by ten wick ets at home to Edenfield. After posting just 29,
it was no surprise to see the visitors knock off the runs without loss. Defeats were also
inflicted on Whalley and Read's second teams, at
the hands . of Oswaldtwistle Immanuel and Settle respectively. Read were skittled for
a paltry 21, chasing Set tle’s 170-6. Read thirds made
amends, beating Cherry Tree by five wickets in the Third Division. The Whalley Road
side were set a target of 150 to win after bowling out the Blackburn outfit, and passed it with half their wickets intact. Ribblesdale Wander
ers thirds also enjoyed a fine victory, bowling out Earby for 45, after being dismissed themselves for 100.
