Barker, proprietor of Moor Lane's Castle Miniatures store, is in charge of co-ordinating the Decembe r 8 th ev en t c ra f ts stalls. He is confident of filling the 35 available pitches a t its market square venue. ■ He also believes that should the

festive market receive public sup port, it will pave the way for a series of summer Sunday craft markets. The proceeds of these events will then go towards fund ing Clitheroe's Christmas lights. Says Mr Barken: "Everyone agrees that Clitheroe's Christmas

lights need improvement. One way of doing this is to hold special summer Sunday markets, with the money stallholders pay for

: their pitches going into a pot to fund better festive lights." "Yet before we plan for summer,

we heed to know that, in theory, the markets would have enough public support to make them suc cessful. We will use the Sunday Christmas market as a test.” . And he dismissed the fears of

organisers of Whalley's December 12th Pickwick Night, concerned tha t a Clitheroe event may detract from their Christmas tra dition of combining Thursday late-night shopping in the village with street entertainment, a fun fair and market. Last year, mar ket stallholders' fees helped the event raise £6,000 for local chari ties. Adds Mr Barken "I know there

has been some consternation among Pickwick Night Commit tee members that , because Clitheroe is holding a Christmas market event which will take place first, it may deter people from supporting Pickwick Night. "Yet in my opinion; there is

plenty of room for both. I will be standing a stall in Clitheroe and ‘ also in Whalley. Clitheroe and Whalley should be supporting one another. We.shouldn't want local people leaving the Ribble Valley for Sunday or late Thursday

. evening shopping in Manchester or some other city or big town, when both Clitheroe and Whalley have unique and excellent shops." Mr Barker, who is working

alongside his wife, Mrs Amanda Barker, Clitheroe market supervi sor Mr Frank Watson arid Mr James Russell, who is in charge of Clitheroe Market for Ribble Val-

ley Borough Council, in promot ing the Christmas event, wants to make it akin to Christmas mar kets in Austria and Germany. , He has already, received assur

ances from 20 of the market square's cabin holders that they will open for trade that Sunday. Nearby cafe. Jimmy Clitheroe's has also agreed to open. In addition, he has secured the

services of Father Christmas, a Punch and Judy operator, a fire juggler, kiddies' face painter and balloon modeller, a swingboat and slide operator and is "80%" cer-. tain of Clitheroe Town Band turning out to play carols. Adds Mr Barken "I would like

to appeal for choirs to come and sing, especially school choirs." Anyone wanting to become

involved in the market can tele phone Mr Barker on 0774 7663590.

£94,000 cash injection will guide Ribble Y7 11 travellers on the right tracks

A RAIL service aimed at keeping ; Ribble Valley train passengers on •

; track has secured £94,0.00? uri.i , mu.The cashhandoutiroin1 the Strate- 1 gic Rail Authority is towards a year- round Sunday service and late night trains which link Clitheroe to Man chester. . The Sunday service, which started

in June when the summer timetable came into operation, brings passen gers into Blackburn from Manches ter every hour, connecting them with Clitheroe or Colne on alternate hours. And the additional late- night ser

from Monday to Saturday, make' trips home from the city easier. if; Previously; the last train left Man- : Chester at 9 p.m., but now Ribble Valley rail users can catch the 10 p.m. service to Clitheroe or the later 11-10 p.m. train which, although terminat ing at Blackburn, links with a dedi cated bus service enabling travellers to make their way back to the Valley. The hew services were the result of

vices, which have been introduced

a bid put forward by the East Lan cashire Partnership, in conjunction with Lancashire County Council, Blackburn with Darwen Council and

'Birch,-secretary of'Ribble. Valley/, ‘Rail, said the permanence of the new iservices would probably depend on< their use and called on people to ' use itorloseit". Said Mr Birch: "It is up to the public to take advantage of the addi-

: tional services and use them." He added that the new Sunday

services offered opportunities for peo ple outside the Valley to come in and enjoy the area, as well as enabling local people to visit places such as Blackpool and the Peak District in a day.

Get involved; - b e a RAG!

LOCALS . wanting to become more active m big issues can join a newly- formed group in Clitheroe' which holds its first meet- ng next week i The "Ribble’ Action

Group (RAG) is being formed to discuss and raise awareness of local, nation al and international issues. Its members will be con

cerned people who have formed a network.using their time, skills, knowl edge and contacts to act on those issues, and who feel that ordinary people have little say in a compli cated and interrelated world in which govern menta l, and corporate power is increasing and is more centralised. Founder member Mr Jo

Harding said: "Doing nothing is often part of the problem." He explained that the

group would be pro-active, but would remain fluid, as not everyone would want to involve themselves in every issue. He added: "The group will have no set agenda and no mani

fe s to , but will involve itself in such issues as war, the a rm s : trade, injustice, poverty and intolerance." The first meeting of

RAG will be held at 7 p.m'. on Thursday, October 10th, at the New Inn, Par son Lane, Clitheroe. After a short welcome by Mr Mark Foord, a member of the Grassington Peace Group, will give a talk on how the group started, what it becomes involved in and how it runs. This will be followed by
