: Blackpool Opera House, from Saturday
IT has taken Joe Lon- gthorne decades to complete the journey from child television star to international artiste with a perfor

entertainer (pictured right), who is headlining at the Opera House, Blackpool, on Saturday for a week, has always wanted to appear in Las Vegas. His ambition has at last been achieved with a booking on New Year's Eve at Silverton Resort Hotel

"SIGNS" (12A) G ran d C in em a , Clitheroe, from October 4th
ANYONE harbouring doubts about M. Knight Shya- malan's talent (even after "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreak able") will find them dispelled after watching "Signs". Set in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the film focuses
on the mysterious appearance of a 500ft design of cir cles and lines in a family's crops. Mel Gibson stars as Graham Hess, the family patri
arch, whose crisis of faith after his wife's death in a car accident is tested to the limit as he tries to find the truth behind this baffling mystery. Turning on the news he discovers similar symbols appearing around the globe, prompting the belief the end of the world is nigh. It is down to Hess to protect his family in a sce nario of unexplained events, paranoia and grief. The first correct competition answer will win a fam ily ticket for a forthcoming film at the Grand Cinema.
show people, so it was only a mat ter of time before he started
years, working with many of Britain's top stars. He then turned pro and earned a living in the Northern working men's clubs, a tough training ground, but an essential apprenticeship for any entertainer. . , ' Since then Joe has
emerged as a devastating impressionist with an uncanny ability for accu racy, as well as being a fine singer and talented musician and songwriter. In 1982 he received the
Variety Club of Great Britain award for Most Promising Artiste Of The Year.

Little Voice with a big reputation to follow
"THE RISE AND FALL OF LITTLE VOICE", Oldham Coliseum
EVERYONE had seen the film "Little Voice" with the incomparable Jane Horrocks, except my com
panion, who was seeing it for the first time. Before this production of Jim Cartwright's
renowned play, directed by Kevin Shaw began, I was envious, as' I thought my memories of the film would spoil my enjoyment - but I was mistaken. The dialogue is witty and well-performed by
Gilian Cally as the dysfunctional drunken mother, Mari and Ged McKenna as self-centred Ray Say. For the first half Aimee Thomas as Little Voice is shy and scarcely heard, but early in the second act she has the chance to belt out an impressive range of singing styles, including Shirley Bassey, Marilyn
Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Gracie Fields (popular with the audience) and the legendary Judy Garland. The supporting cast of Alexander Delamere as
Mr Boo and Janet Parkinson as Sadie provide much humour, but I must make special mention of Michael Hugo, who plays young Billy, who falls in love with Little Voice.
, He won the part after open auditions and is clear
ly an actor with a future. He had the audience laughing and moved in equal parts. Credit must also go to Celia Perkins, the set designer. I'm a fan of her clever use of multiple levels and cunning creation of different settings with the minimum disruption. One of the most important parts of any produc
tion at the Coliseum is the audience, whose mem bers are ready to join in and are appreciative of the actors.
