engines are inherently bad, merely that the diesels are so much better. Trim levels run from

£16,050 2.0-litre HDi LX to the better-equipped £17,050 SX, while the larg er engined cars start at £18,690 for the 2.2-litre SX ranging up to £22,890 for. the top-of-the-range Exclu

sive SE. This saloon will ride and

comer differently to any thing you have ever driven. The credit for this goes to Citroen’s unique Hydrac- tive 3 suspension. Devotees of the marque

who owned an XM or a Xantia would know what

we are talking about here, as both of these cars fea tured early versions of this

system. In its latest form, the

advantages of this fluid- sprung set-up over conven tional steel springs are almost impossible to

ignore. Comfort then is this car s

number one priority. I t is

not seeking to deliver as sharp a driving experience

as you could expect in a Mondeo or a 406—although in fact, it is not that far off. Certainly, the engines are

up to the job. Most buyers will proba

bly opt for the 110 b.h.p.

2.0-litre HDi unit, capable of sprinting to 60 m.p.h. in 11.3 seconds before topping

out at 119 m.p.h. Of common rail architec

ture; this engine pulls strongly from around 1,750 r.p.m. right up to the point where maximum power is reached at around 4,000

r.p.m. Opt for the larger

engined car and you will get a 2.2-litre that pumps out a healthy 136 b.h.p. I t is an impressive installation. I f you can overcome the

dull styling and the imin- spired interior, the Citroen C5 HDi has a great deal going for it.

HOWERED with awards, lav ished with critical acclaim - the Alfa Romeo 147 seemed

Alfa’s impressive 115 b.h.p. JTD common rail diesel engine is set to

make its debut under the 147’s bon net, but the big news for enthusiast drivers is that the 2.0-litrc Twin

Spark engine is at last being paired with a manual transmission.

Of the two engines currently on

offer, the conventionally geared 1.6- litrc model looks to offer much of the thrills for a decent saving over the flagship 2.0-litre car. Performance is reasonable, bear

ing in mind these arc two surpris ingly heavy cars. The 1.6 manages to hit 62 m.p.h. in 10.5 seconds as opposed to 9.3 for the 2.0-litre Sele- speed-cquipped car.

Expect the manual model to shave the best part of a second off

this figure. Top speeds are 121m.p..h for the 1.6 and 129 m.p.h. for the 2.0-litre Twin Spark.

HE Renault Kangoo dTi proves that you do not

need to forgo fun when you

are looking for a diesel MPV. Renault has recently supple

mented the old 1.9D engine with a new 1.9-litre dTi unit, as fea

tured in the Clio range. Although it is much faster than

the normally-aspirated diesel (which continues), the dTi unit is

considerably more frugal, with urban, extra urban and combined figures of 39.2,56.5 and 48.7

m.p.g. respectively. On the move, rest to 60 takes

14.7 seconds on the way to 100 m.p.h.

ly that are demanding food, clothes, Playstations, Nike train ers, foreign holidays and so on, running a Kangoo 1.9 dTi is one part of your life that is not going to give your finances a sound

thrashing. The fact that it is good fun and

has a certain inherent charm comes as a bonus. I t is cheap and

we like it.
