Impressive new look for Whalley church
NOT only churchpeo- ple, but everyone in Whalley, is delighted with the exceptionally effective internal refur bishment of the parish
church. "This new life for the
building makes it a more effective tool for the real work of the church - its worship and mission," says the Vicar of Whalley, the Rev. Chris Sterry. "We are now looking for
ward to a parish mission weekend in September as part of the Diocese of Blackburn's 75 anniversary celebrations, and to the launching of a Saturday early evening service aimed at families." The way the money for
the badly-needed project was raised within 18 months is a source of quiet pride and great satisfac-
tion to church officials. "Working at this common
task has increased our sense of community, not only within the congregation but more widely," says Mr Ster
ry. "We have a strong, confi ..
dent, growing church which looks forward to continuing .to serve the people of Whal ley as it has done for 1,400
years already." The interior of the
church has been trans formed. Peeling and faded paintwork has been replaced by dazzling white limewash, giving a much
brighter interior. The new lighting scheme
not only allows people to read more easily, but high lights many of the numer ous historic features of the
church. Mr Sterry is extremely
grateful to the very many people who have helped the project, from raising money
at many small events as well as some large ones to helping move large, heavy and historic items of furni ture out of and then back into the building. There has also been a large amount of cleaning work. "We.had so much help,
both financial and practi cal. People throughout the community have been so
generous with their time and their money. It says a lot about how our church is loved and valued," says Mr
Sterry. Fund-raising goes on,
partly to pay off a £10,000
debt to the diocese. Mr Sterry is pictured
with just some of those closely connected with the church. (230401/10/5). The main picture gives
some idea of the bright new look which is impressing local people and visitors alike. (230401/1/10/2)

Blackburn Royal Infirmary. Mr Allen's son, Mr Chris
Allen, told the inquest his father had been fit and well
until a couple of years before. He had become con cerned that his father was living in the upstairs Ribble Valley Borough Council property and the fact there was no handrail up the
steps.
Some properties on the same estate had separate
handrails. He had consulted social
services a month or so before the accident, but they said there were no major problems. ■
• "I am disappointed they didn't pick up on some of the staircase issues at that time," Mr Allen told the
coroner. His father had been car
rying sheepskin rugs which had been airing on the line in the garden. He had prob ably trodden on the rugs and toppled backwards,
said Mr Allen. Returning a verdict of
accidental death, the coro ner said the cause of death was a head injury consis tent with a fall down the concrete stairs.
