FURIOUS AS EVER review

b y J o h n T u rn e r Saturday Night Fever; Opera House, Man-

' Chester; -

ZAPI As soon as the curtain rose on "Sat urday Night Fever" the young cast had the audience eating out of the palms o their hands with a combination of vitali

ty, energy and, of course, ability. This was a showcase of the amount oi

talent a new generation is bringing to the British theatre.

The Bee Gees music was brought to , .

the Opera House stage from the 1970s through a successful film and, boy, didn t it show. Especially through the Manches ter audience, full of 40-somethings with their shirt-tails nearer the horizontal than they once were and with a little less hair than they once had. And didn't they have a good time

recreating the old times of hair and flares. "Saturday Night Fever” has been run

stale offering. N o t a b it of it .

Audiences were still getting their

money’s worth from this cast of 40 or so. A slick production pauses for poignant

moments and includes spectacle and drama.

' Ben Richards' performance in the part played by Travolta in the screen version was a marathon one. And seemingly

. , .

faultless, too. ______ ____ He led the company from the front m

more ways than one. Bekki Carpenter's Annette was con

vincing, none more so than when she sang "If I can't have you."

Another high point of "Saturday

Night Fever" was the dancing, choreo graphed by Arlene Phillips. Impressive. The audience gave the company a

rousing reception at the end. Even the usherettes were leaping and whooping

with delight. But then, perhaps, they were happy at

the profit they had made on plain vanilla ice-creams at £1.60p a shot!
