YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO THE
NEW SPYDER IS ENTICING
by Andy Enright W
HEN we first heard that a Spy-
der version of Mas-
erati’s fearsome 3200GT coupe was
planned, most of us figured that it would be a simple tin-open er job on the GT’s
sleek roofline. Few realised that
Maserati would, in effect, build an entirely new car, but there is a new culture in Modena and this most illustri ous of companies was not looking to do things by half. The frontal aspect
11495
may be familiar, but dig deeper and you will dis cover some surprising
changes. Apart from the roof
10995
having disappeared, per haps the most obvious difference is the car’s stance. The elegantly muscular lines of the 3200GT have been replaced by a more aggressive, pugnacious appearance, due largely to a whopping 220mm having been chopped from the wheelbase. The new Spyder,
which costs around £70,00, looks truncated
£6795 £4995 £4995
and slightly buggy-like, with wheels that appear too big for i t - in many
ways like a car design er’s sketch made metal. The back seats were
the first casualty of this , the Spyder being a pure two-seater roadster. The Spyder’s hood is
something of a disap pointment, being an electrically folding fab ric item which not only takes quite some time to raise and lower, but is also fitted with a plastic
rear window. It is not something you would expect in a £70,000 car, especially with Mer cedes’ new SL model showing how the whole roof thing is done. Aside from the body work, the other wholly
new feature is the engine. There is not too much wrong with the twin turbo-charged 370 b.h.p. V8 that is fitted to the 3200GT, but Mauro Rioli, head of engine development at Maserati, has created a work of art beneath the Spyder’s bonnet. The 4.2-litre V8 that
he has signed off boasts 390 b.h.p. That power
translates into some quite stunning perfor mance, with 60 m.p.h. disappearing in less than five seconds and 176 m.p.h. clicking onto the speedometer where con
ditions allow. The brakes are well
up to the task too, with, at the front, big 330mm discs that give genuinely breathtaking powers of retardation.
Two transmissions are
available, a standard six-speed manual or the Cambiocorsa paddle- shift gearchange, similar in conception to Fer- rari’s F I system. As with the Ferrari
box, the system feels slightly unhappy when trying to ape an auto matic gearbox and is at its best when zipping down through the gears
as you approach your favourite comer. In truth, the Maserati
Spyder’s looks and her itage probably meant that it did not actually need to be particularly
good to sell well. That it is represents a
welcome bonus and one that the Modenese com pany’s new clientele should have ample cause to celebrate.
(Renault’s Dynamique
newcomer by Andy Enright
RENAULT is in its pomp at the moment. Cars like the Avan time, the Clio and the Laguna II demonstrate its keen eye for design, a bold vision of the future and its irresistible Gallic
charm. This is a company that does
not have to try too hard, but
does anyway. Yet amid all the headlines
garnered by la Regie’s latest offerings, the Megane range has generated precious few column
inches, but it has racked up enormous sales. This is the car that funds
those flights of automotive fancy and the 1.8 16v Dynam ique is the best model in the range if you need the practicali
ty of five doors. It is a car that does not exact
ly spring to mind when looking for something that caters for the family-oriented motorist who prefers the long route to fetch the Sunday papers. Sportier versions of the Ford
Focus or the Vauxhall Astra seem the default choice, but the Megane has been quietly evolv ing from a good car into a com pelling thoroughly proposition. Evidence of this can be found
in the sheer number of Megane derivatives on sale.
The original car has almost
taken on a life of its own and sprouted into saloon, coupe, convertible and multi-purpose Scenic forms, as well as this more straightforward five-door hatchback guise. Renault has changed from
the more straightforward RX, TXE and so forth to a collec tions based system of naming its cars, and to be frank it is
pretty confusing. The Dynamique model we
examine here lies towards the top of a Megane trim hierarchy that runs from Authentiquc, through Expression and Sport to Dynamique and Privilege. All of which begs he obvious
question - what of the Megane 1.8 16v Sport five-door? In short, there is not one. If you want some fun through the cor
ners, the £12,385 Dynamique is
as good as it gets unless you want to opt for a 1.6-litre engine, whereby Renault will offer a Sport version priced at £11,165. Based on the air-conditioned
Expression specification, Dynamique guise aims to build on Renault’s motor racing image. So there is the almost obligatory rear boot spoiler, front sports scats, front fog lamps and alloy wheels. For that Formula One feel,
there is a chrome-effect dash board, a leather-covered steer ing wheel and gear knob, plus sports part velour/clolh uphol
stery. For sporty drivers, the 1.8 will
probably be the default choice,
this a modern 120 b.h.p. unit with plenty of torque, yet a respectable combined fuel con sumption figure of 36.7 m.p.g. Sixty is 9.8 seconds away

that brief. Most of what is cheap
to run is a bit boring, and most of what is fun to drive either costs a packet or has the struc tural integrity of an Anderson shelter. Step forth the BM W
320td Compact, a car that really does seem to
do it all. Jack of all trades, but master of none? You be the judge. While portraying
themselves as cutting edge manufacturers, in a
lot of instances BM W actually likes to wait for
other rivals to take the plunge with ground breaking advances. Whereas BM W per
sisted with a relatively yester-tech direct injec tion diesel set up for the 3-Series for quite some time, it has only recent ly hopped aboard the common-rail bandwag on and the results are
impressive. One advantage of this
wait and see philosophy is that when B M W does
launch its offering, it is usually a lot more effec tive than everything else
out there. So it proves with the 320td’s engine. The 320td’s common-
rail system has, in effect, been grafted onto the existing mechanicals, replacing the old direct
r exclusive )le plate at
injection set up. If this strikes you as
treonline.co.uk/lish4cars bm
something of a make do and mend solution, the figures would certainly seem to dispute this. The net result is a
benefit of 14 b.h.p., the 320td now turning out a
solid 150 b.h.p. and 2431b/ft of torque. Some
OW often have we been at this particular
by Andy Enright
49.6 m.p.g. has now turned into 51.4 m.p.g. That is the same con
sumption as a 130 b.h.p. Audi A4 diesel. Impres sive stuff indeed. The latest 3 Series
Touring and Saloon models have adopted the Compact’s steering rack, which is quicker and with the amount of power assistance consid erably tapered off, giv ing a greater level of feel and heft at the helm. The 320td adds to
this competence the sophisticated Z-axle sus pension and an engine which serves up its 2431b/ft of effortless
wallop. The fly-by-wire throt
tle feels a little odd at first, but the electronics mean that if you should so desire, BM W ’s excel lent DSC I I I stability control system is, for the first time on a Compact, available as an option. The ability to reach
60 m.p.h. in a mere 8.7 seconds allied to a top speed of 133 m.p.h. will
sell it to many who enthuse over the 51.4 m.p.g. combined fuel consumption. The prices of £19,355
for the standard car and £20,865 for the plusher SE are pitched between the Golf/A3 and Mer cedes C220CDI Sports Coupe levels, although the BM W h a s undoubt edly more engine than
either. There is no getting
away from the fact that £20,000 is a fair outlay for what is a, well, com pact slice of Bavarian
real estate. Nevertheless, the B M W hardly puts a
foot wrong. It is more spacious inside than its predecessor and that magnificent engine speaks for itself. Quick enough to
entertain yet a responsi ble citizen at the pumps, the 320td wins every way up.
