YOUNGSTERS might be singing "Babs the Builder" if the construc tion industry is success ful in recruiting more

women. Sixth formers Faye

Harrison (17) and Olivia

Barlow (16), from Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School, have attend ed a two day conference to gain an insight into the construction indus try. The event was held during National Con

struction Week. The "Change the Face of Construction" confer

ence was one of a series of events aimed at attracting women into the industry. They were designed to promote a positive image to the young participants and to encourage them to think about construction as a career when they

leave school. The conference was

organised by the North West regional office of the Construction Indus try Training Board (CITB) and involved site visits to a number of prestigious projects in Manchester, including The Imperial War Muse um - North and Urbis. A

tour of Terminal Two at M a n c h e s te r A i rp o r t w a s

also arranged. A CITB spokesman

said: "Female students often think of the con struction industry as bricks and mortar. The conference will show them that the industry needs highly skilled managers, engineers and professionals. Hopefully these young women will change the face of the industry in the future."
