is a case in point. With a pair of no-nonsense engines, two body styles to choose from and an inde-. structible air, the Corsa Club is an urban scoot that


looks cute. And you can park it any­


where, safe in the knowl­ edge that it will still be in one piece when you get


back. That is not to say that


the Club, which sits just above the entry-level Expression model in the Corsa hierarchy, is in any


way undesirable. The latest-shape Corsa


may not be not as cute in appearance as it’s prede­ cessor, but it has grown up


in all the areas that were becoming irritating in the old model. And it adds a few new virtues of its own. Just do not expect it to turn any heads, as the lat


est Corsa’s shape is becom­ ing a familiar fixture on British roads. Becoming a Club owner


starts at a mere £7,995, which will land you a 1.0 16v three-door. If you need more doors


or more power, you will need to upgrade to the 1.2- litre 16v engined car, the three-door version of which retails at £8,460, while the five-door will set you back a hardly exorbi­ tant £8,960. As you would expect


from a supermini model which sits near the bargain end of the range, you prob­ ably will not be expecting satellite navigation and cruise control, and you will not be disappointed.


The Corsa Club’s equip­


ment levels arc pretty mod­ est, but then you do tend to get what you pay tor. If you were after a well- equipped rival for the same money, Korean rivals offer more buttons to press and toys to play with, but they do not benefit from the development in a thorough­ ly modern vehicle platform that is evident as soon as you turn a wheel in the


Corsa. You would not expect


outright performance to be a strong point of either Club model, and sure enough, the Club 1.0 takes 16.0 seconds to reach 60 m.p.h. and cannot break the 100 m.p.h. barrier. If that is an issue, then


the 1.2-litre 16v four-cylin­ der model which manages 60 in 12.0 seconds on the way to 106 m.p.h. could be


a better bet. If performance is not


exceptional, the same can hardly be said of the fuel consumption figures. Expect to average 50


m.p.g- in the 1.0-litrc car, or 45 m.p.g. in the 1.2-litre guise and you should not be loo far from the mark. Even at our super-inflat­


ed fuel prices, that is an average year’s motoring for
