Hair of the dog provides what doctor ordered

PATTING dogs was promoted by a Ribble Valley woman and her pet last week as a

way of helping care for people. One member of the charity Pets as Ther

apy (PAT) is Mrs Kathryn Bell, of Lang- ho, who takes her two-year-old black labrador Jess on weekly visits to Castleford Day Centre in Clitheroe. Mrs Bell said: "We both enjoy the visits

tremendously and Jess seems to instinc tively know that she should be gentle and caring during, her interactions with the clients there. As they can’t have pets, the contact is proving very beneficial." PAT is a national charity and was start

ed when founder Lesley Scott-Ordish saw how depressed and lonely many people became when in hospital and separated

from their pets. Today there are around 4,000 active PAT

hospital visiting dogs and 40 cats at work in the UK, visiting more than 100,000 peo ple every week in places where pets cannot be kept. These range from hospitals, nurs

ing homes, day centres, schools, prisons

and young offenders' units. The animals are seen as an aid to recov

ery, or as a regularly visiting friend to peo ple who can stroke and play with them. This has been found to develop affection

and to break down barriers to communica tion by providing the happy associations of

home comforts. Old people in care may never again be

able to have a pet of their own, so are seen as particular beneficiaries of the scheme. PAT dogs and cats are medically healthy,

are temperament tested to a very high standard, and the handler has to provide character references. More animals and volunteer owners are

being sought to increase the number of vis its possible. For more information, call the PAT head office on 01732 872222._ .. Our picture shows Mrs Winnie Sutcliffe
