ENGAGEMENTS'-

Too secure for comfort

A FAULTY alarm on a secu rity van caused red faces for its occupants on Monday, as well as a bit of a headache for shoppers in Clitheroe. The Securitas vehicle had

made its call at Boots chemist's in Castle Street, Clitheroe, in relative peace and quiet. However, when it set off again to call at its next stop, an electrical fault activated the van's alarm and would not switch off. The driver pulled up out

side Barclays Bank and the van's occupants had to sit there for more than one and

cle. Police caution

A CLITHEROE woman who was convicted in her absence of making nuisance telephone calls has applied successfully to have the case reopened and the charge dis continued. Instead, Sylvia Almonti,

of York Street, has been given a police caution. On May 25th, she was

convicted in her absence by Blackburn magistrates for an offence of persistently using the telecommunica tions system to cause annoy ance, inconvenience and needless anxiety to Cather ine Burn on various dates between May 31st, 1998, and November 24th, 1999. Almonti, a former hotelier, was fined £100 with £50 costs and given 14 days to pay. She did not have to appear in court to make the application to have the case reopened.

Spot check on school transport

A TEAM of inspectors from Lancashire County Council and the Vehicle Inspectorate descended on Bowland High School to check on the safety of school transport. Buses and coaches arriv

ing at the school were given thorough safety checks by

the team of inspectors. They involved checking all safety-related features, including tyres, steering, brakes, emergency doors, headlights, seats, seatbelts,

fuel and oil lines. Apart from an oil leak on

one of the nine vehicles checked, which resulted in the operator being given a delayed prohibition, all other vehicles were found to be in full, safe working order. So far this year, 145 vehi

pany said it was not compa ny policy to leave the vehi

cles have been checked across Lancashire and seven have been given immediate prohibition. Vehicles are often required to pass a full MOT before they are allowed back on the road, and the county council takes disciplinary action against the operator.

Two injured in road accident

TWO people were taken to Blackburn Royal Infir mary when their vehicles were involved in a collision on Sawley Brow on Mon day evening. A Nissan Sunny, being

driven by Mr Gulam Miah (27), of Burnley, is believed to have overturned in the accident which happened at 6-15 p.m. He suffered shock, cuts and bruises. The driver of the other

Secondary school places plan comes under fire from lobbying group

LONG-TERM plans for secondary education in the Ribble Valley have been

slammed by a lobbying group and questioned in a borough council report. But Lancashire County and it is criticised in a places. report to councillors by

Council is ready to defend its methods of calculating future needs and its propos als for meeting them. The "Ribble Valley

Forward Planning Manager Mr Mike Kirby. He says that it is "sur

prising and disappointing" that no reference is made in the draft to the proposed new high school for the Rib ble Valley. "The method of calculat

with education committee chairman County Coun. Mrs Hazel Harding and officials, and were not satis fied with the answers. The county team said it was unable to give figures on likely shortfalls, as it did not know what numbers or parental preferences would be. It was investigating the options for a new school. The county's draft school organisation plan for 2000-

2005 falls woefully short of covering future shortages and offering an action plan to resolve the issue, accord ing to the campaign. Copies of the plan arc

ing number of pupils must be seriously questioned," says Mr Kirby. He suggests that more accurate figures on which to plan are avail able than the ones used by

the county. The borough council has

been asked by the county to help in the search for a site to take a 500-place school. But, Mr Kirby points out, it is thought that ones with fewer than 600 pupils are less likely to meet with suc

cess. The county says that it

available at libraries and education offices. Ribble Valley Borough Council has to be consulted on the plan,

School Organisation Com mittee are looking carefully at the issue and at the com ments, and will be dealing with both when it meets at the end of August. The committee is a supervisory one representing various interested parties, and the county will be able to sub mit its case to members, including responses to criti cism. But a county spokesman said this week that for 1999 entry there were 36 pupils from Ribblesdale High School's priority area who could not, initially, be allo cated to it. For this Septem ber, the figure was 15 - but on each occasion all the children were eventually given a place. Next year’s figure will not

be known until the spring term. However, there will be fewer children transferring from primary schools. But the number will rise again
