Low Moor’s dream day

L

OW Moor clinched the Accrington Memorial

Sunday Football League Third Division title on the

last day of the season. In the end it was comfort

able as the locals, needing only a point to deny Kings Arms, who had led all sea son, hammered mid-table Printers Arms 6-0. As the curtain came down

on the season, the only other local side in action were Lord Nelson, whose ended their campaign on a disappointing note with a 2-

LACKBURN Rovers' dis mal campaign was

___ summed up by the la s t game of the season a t home to

Manchester City. They failed to kill off City when

they had the chance, and gave up the ghost when they needed to dig

deep. Fans, and bookmakers, were con

fident of an immediate return to

the Premiership. But a few home truths will have

been told in the dressing room. Rovers were not good enough.

However, in Graeme Souness they hope they have the man to

remedy that situation. Souness will not suffer fools glad

ly, and the players that are happy to pick up big wages, but who too often failed to give value for money on the pitch, will not last long under his stewardship. On their day, Rovers were capa

ble of beating the best in the divi sion, as the win at the Valley in November showed. But the tone was set from the

CHRIS BODEN reports

Souness, and he had 10 games to look at what was the root of the

problem. Good players don’t become bad

overnight, but as Burnley boss Stan Ternent often says, certain players are good players for some clubs, but

not for others. Ewood Park is a fine stage to

play on, and maybe too big for some of the names that have been brought in by Roy Hodgson and

Brian Kidd. Souness feels that major surgery

is not yet required - although eight players are believed to have been

told to find new dubs. But the players he perseveres

with will be on trial to produce - or

else. His message on the front of the match programme against City

first day of the season when Port Vale were unlucky not to take all

three points at Ewood. Rovers failed to score in either

game against a side that were even tually relegated, while Swindon, who looked doomed from day one, took four points off the Blues. Even little Crewe warded off the

drop, aided by the four points they picked up off the Ewood Park side. The 1-0 home defeat against the Alex prompted the arrival of

said it all: "There is only one goal at Blackburn Rovers - a return to the

Premiership. "My job is to bring the good

times back to Ewood Park. "All you supporters out there -

who have stood behind the club so magnificently - can rest assured th a t we won't leave a stone unturned in the quest for glory. "In short, we are going all out for

promotion." Souness is a winner, and one look

around the squad at Ewood shows

a lack of medals or promotions. I t is a harsh truth, but Souness

will want to fill his side with play ers with a will to win, players who will wear the shirt with pride. The shining lights in a hugely disappointing season were Damien

Duff and David Dunn - both brought through the ranks at

Ewood. Duff, many fans’ player of the

year, was only kept out of the PFA divisional representative side by the more consistent Mark Kennedy, who he is also in competition with for a place in the Republic of Ire

land side. More naturally gifted than

Kennedy, Duff left many a full back in a spin, and also gave Steven Gerrard a rough ride in the FA Cup

win at Anfield. Dunn, meanwhile, has edged big

ger names out of a central midfield berth, and deservedly won a call-up for the England Under 21 squad to do battle in the European Champi onships in Slovakia. Mature beyond his 20 years, you

can see what pulling on the famous halved shirt means to the Great

Harwood lad. Elsewhere, the return of Garry

Elitcroft was a welcome one in 12 of the last 13 games, his guile and bite

sorely missed. Alan Kelly - still one of the best

keepers outside the Premiership - established himself as first choice, but elsewhere, it would appear

places are up for grabs. Souness is expected to strength-

on the squad at full back, while a solid centre back pairing has to be

found.Jason McAteer, Keith Gillespie and Damien Johnson will battle it out down the right, but can Souness find the magic formula up front? Egil Ostenstad, Ashley Ward,

Nathan Blake and Matt Jansen netted just 28 times between them - compared to Burnley's Andy Pay- ton, who struck 27 to win the Sec ond Division golden boot. Jansen is the biggest hope. Yet to play regularly for a full

season at Carlisle, Crystal Palace or Rovers, he was more out than in

the starting line-up. Another hugely gifted player,

when he begins to lift his head more often and involve his team-mates he could become a contender for the

England squad. However, although Ward

impressed a lot of onlookers at Barnsley, he has failed to convince at Ewood, along with Blake and

Ostenstad. A summer dip into the transfer

market would appear to be the like

ly outcome. Neil Warnock said when he

brought his Sheffield United side to Ewood for a 5-0 hiding that he did n’t think Rovers would let the First Division off a second time. That remains to be seen. But if Souness can instill any

kind of consistency, and bring in tlie players he wants, they will cer tainly threaten the top six next

term. Sleep extends stunning run ” R

EAD professional Peter Sleep continued his stunning form with the bat in Saturday's glori

a dry spell, Ribblesdale put Read in, and this was soon vindicated when Garry O’Connor was caught behind

from a brute of a lifting ball. This caused Sleep to bat with great

circumspection, with just three singles

off his first 28 balls. Left-handed skipper Nick Marsh,

having survived two edged chances,

had just swept a low six from left-arm spinner Graham Monk when he inju diciously tried it again and was not surprised to see the umpires finger

raised.Thirty-eight runs from the first 20 overs gave the Read supporters plenty of anxiety. However, the easing of the wicket and the arrival of Terry Little at the
