ROVER'S 45 five-door is a classier alternative to more ordinary family hatchbacks, thinks Jonathan Crouch.

AND Rover has acted to capitalise on the new popularity of pick-up trucks by introducing two new ver

sions of the trusty Defender. True to its roots, the Double Cab is

a proven working vehicle, but the addition of an open cargo space at the rear could help it win new fans

as a lifestyle/leisure off-roader. The Double Cab features seating

for up to six people and has a huge payload of more than a tonne. A removable canvas hood is standard. There are two versions, Double Cab

at £20,000 and County Double Cab for £20,810.

replaced the evergreen 400 series at the end of last year and is the vehicle intended to bridge the gap between Rover's smaller cars and the classy 75 exec utive line-up. As before, saloon and five-door bodystyles are being offered, but in 45 guise there is a lot more differen tiation between the two. The five-door 45 line-up

featured here, for example, cannot be had with Rover's desirable 2.0-litre V6 petrol engine: that is reserved for plusher versions of the saloon. It is, however, the only 45 model you can have with 1.4-litre power. For that reason, 45 five-door prices start at just £11,995 - some £3,000 below those of the saloon. The 1.4-litre engine in

question is the larger of the two 1396cc, 16-valve units Rover offers these days, putting out some 103PS. It comes with the choice of four different trim levels _ i, iE, iS or iL. Most models come with

ABS, twin front and side airbags, an alarm/immo- biliser, a pollen filter, power

here, a family hatch developed around the premise that "class needn't cost". The 45, of course,

LTHOUGH Rover has had a tough time of late, the compact cars it now makes still make a lot of sense. Take the 45 featured

steering, remote central locking and steering wheel stereo controls. That is assuming you opt at least for iE trim (from £12,295), a level which also offers 45 buyers the option of a much improved 101PS turbodiesel engine. If you want something a

little sportier, iS trim comes with either 1.4 or 109PS 1.6- litre petrol power and includes an electric sunroof, alloy wheels and a tailgate spoiler. Move up a further grade

to iL level (prices from £13,295) and all three engines-1.4,1.6 and tur bodiesel - are on offer. Whichever you choose,

petrol XS models for exam ple (from £14,695), add front fog lamps, alloy wheels and a spoiler. Pricier 1.8 and turbodiesel XL variants (from £15,195), meanwhile, substitute the spoiler for a power sunroof and smarter trim. Models with the 1.8-litre

engine get the option of the new continuously variable (CVT) Steptronic' automat ic transmission system

however, you can expect air conditioning, power mirrors, a CD player and electric front windows as standard. Rover expects the iL

models to account for the majority of 45 sales. Howev er, expecting that many buyers will want a little more, the marketeers have added two plusher trim lev els to suit customers down grading from larger luxury cars. These are basically the same as iL, but with minor additions. The 1.6 and 1.8-litre

recently introduced on the MGF. Though unlike that car, there are no steering wheel buttons to allow you to flick up and down the box yourself, you can do so by flicking the gear lever back and forth. Alternative ly, you can leave it in drive, just like a conventional auto. Some of the most signifi

cant under-bonnet changes have been reserved for the 2.0-litre turbo diesel that many 45 buyers are expect ed to choose. It features a new high pressure injection system which does little for the 101PS power output, but much for the crucial

torque curve, giving extraor dinary pulling power through the gears. Even in high gears at low speeds, acceleration is instant, a match in fact even for the 2.5-litre V6 used in the 75. A diesel, in other words, to convince even die-hard petrol buyers - or at least that's the idea. Inside, the changes which

have created the 45 are rela tively minor, although there

is a new-style three-spoke rake-adjustable steering wheel with remote audio controls and a larger 45-litre airbag. Extra storage spaces are welcome, as are the redesigned seats (with side airbags at the front) fitted with height adjustment for the driver in most models. At the back, there are rear head restraints and three- point seat belts for all three passengers. Unlike its saloon stable-

mate, the 45 five-door is aimed squarely at family hatchback class leaders like the Focus, Vauxhall's Astra, Peugeot's 306 and VW's Golf, and the price and

equipment packages Rover are offering make it look appealing in that company. There is a new confidence

about the product too, high lighted (at last) by a new three-year warranty and longer 15,000-mile service intervals on most models. It drives with a greater air

of authority too, thanks to a whole series of BMW-engi neered under-the-skin changes intended to imbue a

sportier feel. Rover reckons the entire

45 range should provide a sharper drive than the sportiest of the old 400s. This is quite a claim, partic ularly when you bear in mind that the engine line-up is virtually unchanged. Still, uprated springs and dampers, revised chassis set tings and a power steering rack with faster gearing all give grounds for optimism. Not that Rover buyers

much of the 45's long dis tance ride qualities due.it says, to an innovative sus pension system and hydraulic engine mounts. You will have your own opinions. Certainly, the standards of NVH (noise, vibration and harsh ness) suppression do put the car amongst the class lead ers. Inside the cabin, there is

not quite as much room as the exterior packaging sug gests. Still, user-friendly fea tures include plenty of odd- ment space for maps, tapes and coins and you Mil find that the stereo display is separate from the actual unit, making the theft of it effectively pointless. In summary, then, the 45

tend to have sporting priori ties. For them, the relatively minor tweaks under the bonnet will be of limited interest. On the road, Rover makes

appears to have what it takes - though the reasons lie mainly with Rover's clever packaging. Still, when it comes to that vital first impression in the showroom, it has a class missing from most of the volume-pro duced competition. And that could make all the dif ference.
