THERE have been cel ebrations for both chil dren and adults at Edisford Primary School, Clitheroe, to mark an excellent report from the Gov ernment's OFSTED

inspectors. It showed that good qual

ity, good value-for-money education can be found in urban as well as the more eye-catching rural areas of the Ribble Valley. The team went out of its

Teaching and learning are consistently good, assessment and moni toring of progress is very good, there are positive atti tudes and very good person al development, and the above average number of children with special needs are well integrated into all aspects of school life. ing in uncontroversial but clear terms, said on the first point that the school is very well led and managed by the headteacher, Mrs M. Hallewell, and other staff. She provides a clear direc tion for the work of the school. On the second, the report said: "The school offers a good quality and range of activities to all pupils, including provision of a good range of extra curricular activities." I t points out that the vast majority of parents are sat isfied with what the school provides and achieves, and that concerns of some about the number of gram mar school places obtained are being addressed. Health chief’s call for reduction in cancer deaths

EAST Lancashire needs to do more to reduce the j number of cancer deaths, the Director of Public | Health has admitted. Dr Stephen Morton has

produced the annual public health report for the area and in it says targets for reducing deaths by cancer and accidents may not be

achieved. The Government has set

targets for the reduction in premature deaths by cancer, heart disease, accidents and mental illness. ' By 2010, a 40 per cent

reduction in premature death rates through coro nary heart disease and stroke has been requested. Writing in the annual

report, Dr Mark Smith, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, said: “The prema ture death rates from coro nary heart disease and stroke have reduced rapidly over the past 10 years. The 2010 target, of a 40 per cent reduction in premature death rates, looks to be achievable.” However, he was not so

sure about the cancer and accident deaths target. Writ ing about the numbers of premature cancer deaths, he said: “In East Lancashire

the rate of reduction is not | that steep. “This means we will not I

achieve the local target by 2010 unless a faster rate of reduction can be achieved.” The same is true of acci- I

dental deaths. “The steady decline in accident death rates in England and Wales means that the target I improvement should be achieved if the rate of reduc- | tion is maintained. “Unfortunately, the death I

rate in East Lancashire is hardly decreasing. The pro jection based on recent trends suggests the 2010 tar get will not be reached," added Dr Smith. “At local level the outlook
