the Burnley side out to claim two extra points, but they held them to 78-8 in

reply. /Against Whalley, Wan

derers were chasing 120-8, and with Davies carrying his bat for 67, he led his side to five points with seven wickets in the tent. Clitheroe seconds slipped down the table despite pick

ing up one win. On Saturday they fin

ished up 23 runs short of victory against fellow high fliers Great Harwood. Chasing 168-8, the Chat-

burn Road side were all out for 146, with Welsh taking

defeated derby rivals Sales- bury by a similarly narrow margin, bowling the Roch ester Road outfit out for 129, having made 143-8. Salesbury had beaten

Whalley the day before by seven wickets after holding the men from Station Road

to 108-9. Moss hit an unbeaten 60

mixed weekend. They lost by eight wick

ets to Burnley Belvedere after being all out for 70, before beating Stacksteads

by three wickets. Stacksteads were all out

for 127, and the locals passed the target for the loss of seven wickets. In the Second Division,

THE Ribblesdale League threw away victory in their Manchester

League on Sunday. Chasing 155 to win, the locals went from

103-4, when hard-hitting Padiham batsman Pankaj Tripathi was out for 61, to 139 all out. After making the final against the Bolton

Association last season, it was another case of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. At Denton West CC, the Lancashire Comi

ty League won the toss and chose to bat, with former England skipper Mike Atherton's

brother Chris opening. Barnoldswick's Paul Beech and skipper

Michael Scothem were the pick of the bowlers,

against Great Harwood a t Chatburn Road on Satur

day. Chasing the visitors' total

of 154-8, a photo-finish

looked set to be the case. After losing professional

Dexter Fitton for 15, Neil Bolton and Andy Burns had put the locals in a handy position. But the last seven bats

men could only score 34 between them and Clitheroe finished up 25 runs short, bowled out with 4.5 overs remaining. Mark Harvey and Daniel

Cheeseborough got the vis itors off to a decent start before F itto n made the breakthrough. He was to claim the first

three Harwood batsmen, Harvey for 22, Matthew' Cheeseborough for 2 and Daniel for 35. Clitheroe then met fur

Bolton (15) and Matthew Cheeseborough (12) could reach double figures as the locals were

skittled for 139. The team was Ian Scothem, Michael Scoth

Clitheroe tail fails to wag LITHEROE sim

ther resistance from Atkin son and Armer, and although Neil Bibby bowled the former for 17, Armer managed to tie one

end down. He went on to make 47

before being out to Fitton. He found little support

elsewhere as F itto n and Bibby enjoyed more success, although the bonus bowling points proved elusive. Fitton ended with 5-57

off 16 overs, while Bibby claimed 3-38 off 13. Clitheroe got off to a

great s ta r t in reply, although they saw Fitton back in the pavilion for 15. Bolton (43) and Burns'

(34) looked capable of edg ing their side towards victo ry before they perished. And only Simon Coulter

(14) could join them in dou ble figures as Newton and Simpson ripped through the

order. Newton ended with 6-37

off 17 overs, with Simpson chipping in with 4-44 off 16.1.

FINE knock of 71 from Kevin Reed couldn’t prevent Whalley losing at home to Earby.

Pratt’s men may, perhaps, be kicking them selves for not taking full advantage of win

ning the toss. Their competitive total of 168-3 off then

allotted 45 overs was certainly not enough as a Jon Harvey- inspired Earby cruised home with just under four overs to spare. Professional Graham Knowles opened

the batting with Dave Pearson. They began steadily, only opening their shoulders when

the bad ball came along. There was 65 runs on the board when

Pearson was undone by Ronnie Wiseman for 26 with Matthew Plant taking the

catch* Three runs later Lee Kearsley was back

in the pavilion for one, being the victim of Harvey thanks to a fine catch from Steve

Rushton. Reed came to the crease and despite a slow start, began to take the attack to the

Earby bowlers. Two sixes were sandwiched between the

wicket of Knowles who was picked off by his fellow paid man off the bowling of Wise

man. This didn’t upset Reed, however, as he

continued to attack. Next-batsmen-in John Kearsley was little more than a standing spectator as Reed smacked an amazing five sixes but no fours.

The innings eventually closed on 168 with Reed unbeaten on 71 and Kearsley 13

not out. In reply, Stephen Pickles became an early

scalp of Knowles for eight with the score on 20. And Steve Rushton hung around for a while before perishing to the same bowler

for 14. However, Harvey and Plant came togeth

er and took the score well within sight of

Whalley’s total. Both batsmen found the boundary fre
