Biathlon success for Dolphins M

e m b e r s of Clitheroe Dolphins

were in fine fettle a t the North of England summer b ia th lo n and tr ia th lo n championships in War rington. The young Ribble Valley

athletes came out on top in both disciplines, particular ly excelling in the triathlon where it was the first time they had entered a team. The Under 14s boys’

team of Toby Banfield, Paul Jaggs and Matthew Poplett emerged victorious in the biathlon, while Ban- field and Poplett combined with Martin Greenwood to win the triathlon. Among the Under 12s

girls’ team Catherine Dud- bridge, Louise High ton and Thea Smith won the biathlon and Dudbridge, Ilighton and Carla Green wood performed heroically in the triathlon but were pipped into second. Highton achieved a

superb top-place finish in her individual biathlon while Smith, Adrian Wear ing, Beth Ilighton and Mark Jaggs all came home in the top six of their respec tive individual events. The Dolphins, since first

competing in biathlons two years ago, have gone from strength to strength with an ever increasing number of youngsters joining the club.

Bolton Wanderers will be visit

later. Nationwide Conference side

Leigh RMI will be a t Shaw bridge on Saturday, August 5th, while Castleton Gabriels com plete the friendly fixture list a week later. Admission prices are set to

remain the same for the forthcom ing season with season tickets to remain at £55 and concessions £27.50. Tickets bought before

July 31st will be reduced to £50 and £25. Attendance income has

_ n

dropped for the third year run ning by £2000 and Clitheroe chairman Steve Rush is appealing for more people to support the club. Treasurer Terry Nelson said:

“Our average gate last season was 192. It is not nearly enough if we are to attract the type of player needed to progress beyond its pre sent level of competition. “With gates of 300 plus, we would have the financial muscle

to progress to the Unibond i - i 1,

League.” A new executive club is being

set up in an effort to raise funds for the team. The club is looking for 25 members each paying £20 a month with 50% income paid out as a monthly draw. The club are also in negotiation

with present sponsors Castle Cement in finalising a new spon sorship deal for next season. For season ticket enquiries or

membership of the Blues’ execu tive club please contact Mr Nel son on 01200 425061.
