FO RM E R Ribble Valley residents M r and M r s P h i l ip and B ren d a Bratherton are putting their feet for ward in a fund-raising initiative. The couple, who spent 10 years liv

ing and working for the Parker family at Browsholme Hall, never expected a holiday in Luxor, Egypt, to turn out the way it did. While wandering around the back

streets of Luxor, they discovered the Sunshine Home for Orphaned and Aban doned Children. 'they entered the building and met

orphanage founder I’ear Smith. She showed them around and explained how she had founded the orphanage in 1996. The couple met 19 children who had been abandoned, the eldest aged nine and the youngest just six days old. The Brathertons spent most of the day there, realising that, had the children not been rescued, some would not have survived and others would have become street children.

Asking if they could help, they were told

that the greatest need was for food and basic items. Due to problems with post, they decided that the most practical method of helping was by cash donation. On their return to Buckinghamshire, Mr

Bratherton, who works at Pipers Corner School as a security officer, set out for Mis- senden Abbey, accompanied by his daugh ters, Lorna and Ruth, on a 10-mile spon sored walk. .Joined by several school pupils, Mr Bratherton's efforts have so far raised 412,300, which is going to the project. Now, the Brathertons, whose son, Math

ew, is a sales executive at Primrose Motors, Clitheroe, are appealing to any Clitheroe people interested in the plight of the chil

dren to help. "Any donation, no matter how small,

will be greatly appreciated and used in the children's best interests," say the couple. "Can we point out that ill in English money is equal to 415 in Egyptian and goes a long way." The Urathertons (pictured I can be con

tacted by telephone on: 01-191719817, or at their home, The Lodge, Pipers Corner School, Great Kingshill, Bucks, I1P156LP.

RELATIVES and friends of residents supported an open day at Corbridge Court, Clitheroe. People who are thinking of going into such accommoda

tion also looked round the sheltered housing complex,^ which is run by Housing 21 and has been open for five,

years. "We are always pleased to talk to people, but we had an

open day to coincide with National Sheltered Housing Week," said court manager Mrs Denise Warburton. Our picture shows resident Mrs Margaret Seddon with some of the craft work on display. (A250500/4/78)

of Egyptian orphans Pregnancy law being ignored,

claims CAB

SOME employers are ignoring special laws for pregnant and part-time workers, the Ribble Val ley Citizens' Advice Bureau claims in its annual

report. The report, which was

due to come before the bureau's AGM in Ribble Valley Council Chamber yesterday, says there is "increasing evidence" of

the problem. The message is tha t

bosses are ignoring risk assessment rules intro duced to protect the health of mothers-to- be and their unborn babies in the workplace. The report goes on to say

that "the law regarding part-time workers is not being respected - leading, in particular, to the indirect sex discrimination that aris es from requiring mothers of young children to work full time." Solutions for the prob

lems are suggested in the report: "We believe that the law

might be more respected if the cost to small employers was borne directly by the state. "To be effective, laws

require a balance between the costs of compliance and defiance. For small employ ers, the cost, for example, of

suspension on full pay dur ing pregnancy, is substan tial, but the enforcement of the various laws and regula tions is left to the action of aggrieved individuals, most of whom are ignorant of their rights (as, we suspect, are their employers) and who depend on the limited resources of CAB. "The Equal Opportunity

Commission is not, in our experience, adequately funded for this task. Defi ance, or ignorance, of the law is thus an inexpensive

option. "This cannot be what

Parliament intended. If the Government can introduce state funding for 'parental leave' periods, why not for pregnancy suspension? "Perhaps it could also

consider funding the Health and Safety Executive to carry out free risk assess ments for small employers." Meanwhile, the report

points out that there has been a "great increase" in the number of CAB clients helped with employment problems in general over the past year.

Your heller skelter schedule will start to slow down visibly now and there may b e a sense o f frustrating delays at work. Try to throw your ex cess energy into re-organising o r re-decorating at home since you do want to add elegant touches, even plan the odd party in the weeks to com e. Otherwise just cultivate patience. Everything com es to those who wait. Maybe you can also use the time to step back slightly to unpick a few mistakes and start afresh.

Your schedule will suddenly shoot into a faster pace with a good deal of rushing around, answering more letters and phone calls than usual. You will not be suffering slow coaches or other people’s mistakes gladly but try to tone down your sharp comments. Luckily tactful Venus will be around from Sunday to pour oil on troubled waters and keep a more harmonious mood. Try not to walk, cycle o r drive to fast. More haste less speed.
