Vicar sets record straight over his views on

adoption by gay couples

A T OOAL vicar savs he wants to set the record straight because some peo- pie

in his parish magazine, the Rev. Rodney Nicholson, of St Paul's Church, Low Moor, says th a t he was

applications to adopt. In his original article, Mr

Nicholson urged parishes not to withdraw their sup port for the charity because

of the decision. In his later item, Mr

Nicholson writes that, whilst’ there is nothing strictly inaccurate with the report, the implication is misleading if it gives the impression that he is happy with homosexual activity. This is, he points out, cer tainly not the case. He adds: "When it comes

to adults in so-called same- sex relationships, I would rather avoid asking too many questions about their private lives. Of course, marriage is what God intends for most people, yet human beings are not as simple as is sometimes made out. I t is easy to^be judgmental and I do think that society has traditional ly been obsessed with sexu al sins, whilst ignoring other sins, which are equally seri-

ous." Mr Nicholson stands by

his support for the Chil dren's Society, which he emphasises is putting the best interests of children first in considering adop tion and fostering requests from gay couples. He refers parishioners to an article he wrote for the diocesan newsletter, "The See", which sparked the original newspaper report and in which he summarised the

charity's case.

Rocking to sounds of the ’60s

PARENTS and friends of Gisburn CE Prima ry School danced the night away to the sounds of the '60s — and raised £400 for school

funds. The Strong Beer Band,

of Skipton, played for dancing at the night of nos talgia held at Stirk House Hotel, where a pie-and- peas supper was also on the

programme. Mrs Janette Pate, chair

man of the Friends of Gis burn School, which organ ised the event, said some 130 people attended, adding: "It was a resound ing success. The profits will be spent on buying books for the pupils." Our picture shows par ents and friends taking a break from dancing.

one to remember for all the right reasons takes a lot of time and effort and you will probably need all the help you can get: So to help take those wedding

worries away, East Lancashire Newspapers, the publishers of this newspaper, has organised the 1999 Bridal Fayre, to be held at the Fence Gate Inn and Banqueting Centre at Fence on Sunday. Between 11-30 a.m. and 4 p.m., professionals from a wide range of

fields will be on hand to help and advise you about every single aspect of your wedding arrangements, right down to the finest detail. Exhibitors from confectioners and

photographers to beauticians and florists will be there to guide and assist you in making the best choice and to ensure your big day is perfect

in every way. Sponsored by Initiative Burnley,

Sunday's event promises to be a spectacular day out, with a variety of stands and exhibitions to keep visitors occupied.

■ Admission is fruepe and a ic f r and those who

attend will have the chance to view the award-winning Fence Gate for themselves. Renowned for its unri valled reputation for good food, hos pitality and service for well over a decade, the venue could be ideal for

your special occasion. "Bookings for weddings in the

year 2000 are in excess of our expec tations, which we feel is due to the popularity of the venue," said gen eral manager Mr Stephen Pope. The Topiary Brasserie, which is

widely acclaimed for the quality and presentation of modern and English cuisine will be open, as it is at lunchtimes and evenings seven

days a week. Deciding what to wear is one of

the major dilemmas facing bride and bridegroom, but the Bridal Fayre is tailor-made to help with

such quandaries. Fashion shows have been planned

for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with models displaying a range of wedding wear supplied by Emma Hartley Bridal- wear, of Colne, and Academy Menswear, of Preston. So if you are planning on walking

down the aisle in the near future, get along to the Fence Gate on Sunday and let the 1999 Bridal Fayre wipe those wedding worries away. ® Anyone wishing to know more

about the event can contact Sharon Hamilton on 426161.

CRGS sixth form centre evacuated

A FAULTY light fitting led to the evacuation of CRGS Sixth Form Centre, Clitheroe, on Thursday. The fitting was in an

unoccupied language teach ing classroom and a passing pupil noticed smoke and raised the alarm. Pupils, teachers, catering

and other ancillary staff filed out and lined up in the yard at the front of the building as Clitheroe fire fighters isolated the smoul dering fitting. Melting insu lation caused a pungent smell but the incident was

soon over. "All the correct proce

dures were carried out quickly and smoothly and there was no danger to any one," said a spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service. "Had the fault occured when the room was occupied it would have been seen at once."
