Key month for ambitious Blues

CTOBER is a key month

for _ Clitheroe's F ir s t

N o r th Western Trains League title ambitions. And Steve Parry hopes to

get the month off to a flying start at lowly Atherton Col lieries on Saturday. After one defeat in eight

games, the Blues lie four points behind First Divi sion leaders Fleetwood Freeport, although sides in and around have games in

hand. But with eight league

games in the next month, Parry hopes a repeat of the recent run will establish his side as serious champi onship contenders. After travelling to Ather

ton Collieries, the Blues then face St Helens Town away (6th), Abbey Hey at home (12th), Leek CSOB away (16th), Salford City away (19th), Newcastle Town at home (23rd), Col lieries at home (26th) before finishing with a trip to Abbey Hey (30th). So there are three of the

enough yet - we still need th a t odd signing here or there. "I'm still confident we

will be there or thereabouts though. "October is a key month

for us. "If we can string a few

results together again, it should give us confidence, as well, obviously, as points

in the bag." He added: "Overall, I am

happy with the s ta r t we have made, although we can still improve. "We talked about one or

two things last week, and we are still trying to get more organised defending dead ball situations. "There is nothing major

wrong, no-one is cutting us open still, but we need to deal with set pieces better. "We have started to score

the back, get the ball down and maintain possession." On Saturday, Parry is

again without striker Brian Welch (Achilles) and Andy Cowking (groin), but apart from th a t, he has a full squad to select from. Parry is also hoping to

avoid being without five- goal Dennis Hill. Hill was sent-off last

Tuesday against Fleetwood for handling a shot that had already gone in, and the club are considering an appeal against a suspen sion. Clilheroe .....................1 Kidsgrove Athletic ■ - 0

WIN G ER Dennis Hill again proved the scourge of Kidsgrove as his penal ty gave th e Blues the points a t Shawbridge on Saturday. I t was Hill who netted

Tuesday when he was forced to watch Barry Hart miss a penalty that would have earned the Blues a point, after being sent off for deliberate handball, he was delighted to fire home his fifth goal of the season., H ar t was involved in

the winner in last season's Floodlit Trophy Final at Maine Road against the Stoke side, and he popped up again to keep Clitheroe in touch with the paceset ters. Like last Tuesday's 3-2

home defeat against Fleet- wood Freeport, this game was won and lost from the spot. This time the Blues took

their chance, while Kids grove let Clitheroe off the hook. Both sides sparred with

each other early on, with chances few and far between. But Clitheroe claimed

goals from Taylor and Jackson. Goals from Benfield, Cronow and

wide. Kidsgrove tried manfully

to make up for that error in the remaning half hour, but keeper. Kris Richens was in top form, denying the visi tors on several occasions. •, He pulled off a string of

top-drawer saves to pre serve a point and deserved-; ly claim the man-of-the- match award.
