Manager’s praise for his battling Blues

By JUSTIN CONNOLLY

DELIGHTED Clitheroe boss Steve Parry praised every one of his players after they took another significant step on the road to Wembley

on Saturday. In beating St Helens at Shaw-

bridge they had shown the kind of character which could take

them all the way. “Every one of the 14 players

who played today deserved the result because they worked very, very hard,” lie said after the game. “The quality of the pitch was

not as we would have liked it. “I’m surprised we got the game

scrappy in the second half I thought we deserved to win it. “In the first half we created a

on at all after the rain we have had. “And although it got a bit

number of good chances and could have had more than one. “Pennington is a good player

for them up front, but I thought w,e kept him quiet well. “We knew we would have to cut

off the supply to him which Bryan Griffiths gives him, and we did that quite well. “Brian Welch showed he will be a good asset and he could have

scored a few. “He hasn’t played for nine weeks and he admitted himself he

got a little bit tired. “But he will get fitter as he

plays and can only get better.” Clitheroe will now face Wessex

League side Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the next round of the competition. That game will be held at

Shawbridge a week on Saturday. And Parry revealed that he

myself or have someone else go and watch them before we play them. “They have had someone here

“But I will go and watch them best advantage we can have is a

today watching us. “But at the end of the day the

already has some inside informa tion on the side which stands between him and a place in the quarter-finals. “One of our committee men happened to be at the last round game between them and Goole, so we will bo having a chat to him,” he said.

home draw. “Everyone is really up for it and they don’t need any encour

agement from me. “It helps to have people like

Chris Grimshaw and Clive Dunn in the side who played at Wemb ley last time. “They can tell the rest of the

lads what i t ’s like and what it means.”

Blues past St Helens Town at Shawbridge and into the last 16 of this year's competition. The Clitheroe faithful are once

acter than skill. The glue-pot pitch cut up badly

again beginning to dream of a return trip to the world-famous

Twin Towers. The match was more about char

and resembled a heavily ploughed field by the mid-point of the second half. In the end Clitheroe wanted the result badly enough and were the

side to prevail. But it was not without a fight. St Helens are a good side and in

Steve Pennington have one of the most lethal strikers in the league. If he gets a chance he usually

puts it away. But Saturday was not his day

Gary Rishton

form to block his way. He came close to scoring after just five minutes but his shot was

straight at Hills. After that most of the first half

belonged to Clitheroe. New-signing Brian Welch

showed some great touches and could have had a hat-trick with more composure in front of goal. He hasn’t played for more than

and the limited opportunities he had either skimmed wide or found Clitheroe keeper Andy Hills in fine

art fired over a cross which Jon Riley turned towards goal. The ball was blocked and came

back out to skipper Chris Grimshaw who put it back in to Welch. His shot was straight at Michael Allison in the St Helens

goal. Welch showed good touches

when he broke away down the right after 23 minutes minutes but his cross was turned weakly towards the keeper by Andy Taylor. Right on the stroke of half-time

goal cost him. In the sixth minute Mark Stew

past the upright. A minute later Hart managed to back-head the ball onto the foot of his own post to give the home fans a scare. In the meantime Welch missed a

couple of good opportunities to make the game safe at the other

end. St Helens pushed forward to the

an equaliser. Substitute Gary Laird launched

Clitheroe won a corner on the right. It was text-book stuff. Full-back Barry Hart fired it to

dying seconds and almost snatched

a powerful s trik e from 25 yards which crashed into the side netting. But that was to be the last effort

St Helens could muster. Clitheroe were through, and on

the near post where Stewart back- headed it on to the far post. There Rishton arrived unchal

and meant St Helens, who had been sitting back hoping to hit Clitheroe on the break, would have to come forward more. That they did in the second half

lenged to nod the ball home. It was the perfect time to score

two months and, while it didn’t show in his general play, his lack of fitness and sharpness in front of

second half performance, but that was more down to the pitch than

merit too. They had produced a scrappy

anything else. They had defended manfully,

worked very hard and produced the vital goal at the right time. Clitheroe: Hills, Norman, Hart,

and Pennington carved out some good chances for himself. Late on he took the ball down on

his chest on the edge of the area, and turned and fired the ball just

we need to get some form back in the league,” Parry said. “The lads will know there are

places for the Vase game up for grabs and they will need to play well to be in with a shout.” O Clitheroe have a home fixture on Monday when they will take on I-Iolker Old Boys in the North Western Trains League. Kick-off at Shawbridge is 7-45
