drops in to prove its commitment to area

by Tim Procter

stration of the commitment The Countryside Agency has

H

made to the area. What is not so obvious is the-

agency's total cash spending in the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bow- land in the past year - in excess of £200,000! Some of this was committed by

wide range of private sector organi sations," says Clare Warburton, the agency's Countryside Officer for

elicopter "drops" of stone on top of Pen- dle Hill last week provided a very public demon

Lancashire. Indeed, the helicopter task was

part of a county council project, with money coming also from ERDF 5B European funds. The airborne operation could hardly be more obvious, visible to anyone looking towards the hill from the Ribble Valley, Pendle and Burnley areas. Stone was picked up in large white containers from a nearby dis used quarry and lowered for use in renovation work on the diagonal path on the main south-east face of

the former Countryside Commis sion which was replaced by the agency six months ago. The new body has a very wide brief, includ ing but far exceeding the obvious task of improving the countryside and making its pleasures easily accessible to all. Tackling rural dis advantage and the varied transport and agricultural problems experi enced is high on the agenda. Tourism might bring jobs and money but there is a "swamping the countryside" downside as well — the agency is keen to minimise that. This area is already benefitting from these varied policies and there

is more to come. "We work with valued partners

access project is the Pennine Bri dleway, which cuts through the area. The agency has won a £1.8m. grant towards the £3.6m. cost of creating a route from Derbyshire to Long Preston, and supports rights of way work in general. It is leading a research prpoject, with the coun ty county council, into the demand for a network of green routes in the Forest of Bowland for use by walk ers, cyclists and horesriders. The agency is significantly con

tributing to two local pioneering efforts, the countryside diversifying Bowland Initiative, and the trans port interchange by the railway sta tion in Clitheroe, where it is putting in £50,000 over three years. Money has also been made avail

though they were not selected for it at 11. In fact, about 60 per cent of this year's new students are from other places. Ribblesdale High School has the

biggest share, with 48. Although a much smaller school, Bowland High

has contributed 13, and there are 15 from St Augustine's, Billington, and 16 from Longridge High School. Smaller numbers come from Black burn, Accrington, Burnley, Nelson

and Colne. This wide spread of benefit from the sixth form centre is thought likely

to count very much in favour of CRGS, both in the eyes of the Gov ernment and the parents who, just possibly, may have to ballot for the school's future! Meanwhile, there will be a slight

dip in university entrance next year, as the current upper sixth has 240 members, against 254 last year. But then a big rise looks likely, for

308 boys and girls joined the lower sixth in September, and most will go on to higher education in 2001. That number could exceed Eton's!

agency will help individual parish es, village hall committees and the like. But it also is strongly commit ted to other issues, varying from woodland to affordable rural hous ing. There is a scheme to help shops

which are the only ones in rural vil

lages. One of the agency's hoard mem

bers is the Bishop of Blackburn, the Rt Rev. Alan Chesters and another is Mrs Janet Bradbury, who is Director of Development at Pendle Borough Council. The regional public relations advisor for the agency is Mrs Olivia Assheton, who runs her own consultancy from Downham.
