months of negotiations between Lancashire Cou nty Council, Ribble Valley Borough Council and the local taxi drivers' associa tion, the new rank was put in place last weekend in the parking bays directly in front of J. Cowgill and Son's Newsagents and the
Oxfam shop. However, cab drivers say
the rank sign, fitted by Lan cashire County Council, on the wall between the two shops, is so insignificant no one has recognised it is there. The rank is to be for the exclusive use of taxis between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. During the day, it is public parking for
the usual 30 minutes. "No one can see the sign,
it's not visible to members of the the public unless they really look for it. We are grateful for having these spaces given to us, but we cannot get anywhere near them, because there are cars parked in them regardless. As it stands, it's a waste of time," said a spokesman for
