THE international language was fo o tb al l a t th e Ca lde rs tones Kosova Village as social services staff took on a team of residents. The game was the decider in a

series of three, with both sides hav ing claimed one apiece in the previ

Catering staff team members, led by Mr Darren Harris, playing in the De Lacy Arms strip, were surprised by the level of technical ability displayed by the Kosovars, who sported a strip donated by Clitheroe Wolves.

Cultural attache launches Asian arts festival

A FASCINATING talk on Asian cul ture in Britain was given by a cultural attache to an audience a t the Plat form Gallery to launch the Ribble Valley's first ever Asian arts festival. Mela Magic is a two-week event in

the Ribble VaUey celebrating many dif ferent aspects of Asian culture and the colourful contribution it makes to Lan

cashire life. Over the next fortnight, a plethora of

events will be taking place as part of the festival around the Ribble Valley, including, dance, music and art work

shops. Dr Shakoor, of Manchester-based . ^ u J

Asian Art 2000, kicked off the "Mela," meaning festival, with an entertaining talk about the history and culture of

Asians in Britain. He explained to the audience the differences iietween llie religions and cultures of Hinduism.

Sikhism and Islam. He demonstrated many of the simi

larities between the Bible and tlie Koran, arguing that 21 figures in the Old and New Testament are featured

in the Islamic Holy book. After the meeting. Dr Shakoor spoke

of the importance of the Mela. He said: "It's a celebration Of the Asian commu nity living in the Ribble Valley since tlic '50s. With the Millennium coming next year, it is a timely reminder of what Asian people have acliicved witliin our society.
