R IM IN G TO N completed the first
leg o f a possible treble with a com prehensive v ic to r y in the League
Cup final. The match was played at Rolls-
Royce in Barnoldswick and from the kick-off it was obvious that Rimington were the more positive team. They played good fo o tb a ll and pushed the Intake players deep into
their own territory. Rimington went into the lead after
10 minutes when Eric Geldard scored with a well-struck shot from a distance
of 25 yards. With Rimington’s midfield winning
every challenge and with the amount of pressure being exerted by the villagers it seemed a foregone conclusion that a glut of goals were there for the taking. But it was not to be with several

good chances being missed by Ashton, Butcher, Geldard and Waterhouse. At the interval and with Rimington
leading by a single goal, Daryl Smith in the Rimington goal did not have a save to deal with anything throughout the entire first half. That was due to some good defend ing by Burgess, O’Hara and Steve
McCullough. During the opening stages of the sec
ond half the villagers allowed them selves to be pushed back by Intake and Smith was forced into making two excellent saves in the 48th and 55th minute to keep Rimington ahead. On the hour Marsden had a fine
volleyed goal disallowed as he was adjudged to have fouled an Intake defender while challenging for the ball. This seemed to spur Rimington on and once again they took complete con
trol of the game. When Ashton and Butcher scored for

make resulted in
Barnoldswick scoring the opening goal which keeper Ryan got a hand to but couldn’ t keep out. Tom Bartlett replied with
a superb low drive into the b o t tom corner o f the Barnoldswick net and the
first half ended 1-1. In the second half Paul

Parkinson passed the ball to Moore who stepped over the ball for Bartlett to hammer
home. Moore then got on the
scoresheet with a great shot which looped over the keeper for Bradford’s third. Barnoldswick did mount
some pressure but could not penetrate the Bradford
defence. Dobson rounded off his
fine performance by scoring Bradford’s fourth. Tom Bartlett wrapped it
up with a fine headed goal to score Bradford’s fifth and
complete his hat-trick. This was a great team per

B A T T L IN G West Brad fo rd cam e o u t o n to p after a derby-day visit to
Clitheroe. It was the home side who
created an early chance, hit ting the Bradford crossbar. But the visitors had
chances too, hitting the woodwork more than once.
Qfmuoft T-Tirklinff V Stewart Hickling broke
the deadlock with a fine shot into the far corner of the Clitheroe net. But the home side hit back to level the scores just
before half-time. The second half saw more
of the same, but Bradford had the upper hand, finding the woodwork several more times. Hickling got the winning
goal after beating the Clitheroe defence and round
ing their keeper. It was another great team
performance from Bradford, but the man-of-the-match award went to Hickling in recognition of his two goals.
the villagers it seemed over for Intake. At this stage Rimington were once
again relaxed and following a very bad cross-field pass from a Rimington defender Intake gained possession and with Rimington’s defenders standing still Intake pulled a goal back with a
close-range header. Any hope, though, that Intake still
had was further dashed when the vil lagers scored another two goals through
Ashton and Waterhouse. Intake did manage to score a second
goal 10 minutes from the end and in the closing 10 minutes of the game Mick Ashton missed two chances for Riming ton which would have seen him com plete his hat-trick. At the final whistle the score was 5-2 - a comfortable and very comprehen
sive victory for Rimington. Every member of the side played his

On Monday night at Shawbridge they took on bottom side Atherton Collieries and
easily beat them 7-0. Martin Rimmer scored two as did Simon

the first half Clitheroe went a goal behind. Derick Mercer equalised before the break
but poor defensive play by Clitheroe let the visitors in again to lead 2-1 at half-time. Things worsened in the second half with the

working hard. Although there were few

had little trouble in scoring two more goals. On Thursday at Haslingden they dominat

son. The club’s committee decided
at a meeting this week to offer th e mana gem ent du o the chance to carry on in the job for
the 1998-99 season. And the pair accepted immedi
ately. Underwood and Butcher took over
at the Shawbridge helm at the start o f the 1994-95 season and immedi ately guided the side to second place in the North-West Counties’ League First Division. The following year the team made it to Wembley for the FA Carlsberg
Vase Final. Last season saw the side gunning for the title and they were rarely out
of the top three. This year has been disappointing
for Clitheroe, but a recent good run has seen them go nine game unbeat
en. And the managers have signed
on a number of new players in a bid to reduce the average age o f the
side. With recent form improving and
the managers’ having a clear idea about what personnel they need for next season’s campaign Clitheroe fans can look towards August with with
some optimism. Underwood and Butcher have a
clearly stated youth policy in place. They want to draw on local junior
talent and let their relationship with Clitheroe Wolves continue to flour
ish. And they also want to make sure
that they know about all the good players in the local feeder leagues. The latest game in the recent good run of form saw the Blues travel to
Warrington and win 1-0. I t was a typ ica l end -o f -sea s on

chances. Clitheroe included the latest of
their new signings in Paul Mashiter, who arrived this week: from Fenis- cowles. He gave a good account of
himself. Warrington proved a strong test
fo r the Blues and pressurised the defence for long periods. X a v Bowers was in commanding
form in the middle of the defence and Neil Baron was a tower of strength beside him, making things very diffi
cult for the home side. But with little to play fo r both
sides lacked m o t iv a t ion and the defences had the upper-hand. Five minutes into the second half the Blues took the lead when Andy Taylor
was rewarded for his hard work. He ran down the left, cut in and
beat the keeper at the near post. Warrington had the ball in the net
following a free-kick, but the referee disallowed it because the free-kick
was indirect. The home side came back at the
Blues and put some real pressure on, bu t cou ld n o t cra ck C l ith e ro e ’s defence with John Morrey in fine
form in goal. Clitheroe held out for the the three
points which keeps them in seventh spot in the table.
Newcastle Town 1 Clitheroe 1__________ __________
On Saturday Clitheroe visited title chasing Newcastle and came home
with a 1-1 draw. That took the Blues unbeaten run
to eight games and that despite a number of new players being intro
duced to the squad. Newcastle slipped even further
behind the two leaders Burscough and Kidsgrove after dropping two points.
.................................‘ For a long time it even looked as if
Clitheroe would snatch all three points as they held the lead with just
five minutes to go. But then up popped Newcastle’s
24-goal man John Burndred to smash home an equaliser. It was the home side who started
the game the brighter and they won a series of comers early on. But X a v Bowers and Dave Ben
nett were in commanding mood in the heart o f the Blues’ defence and were proving very difficult to break- down. Clitheroe came back at Newcastle through Dennis Hill, who crossed for
Jon Riley to fire wide of the post. The Blues continued tp press and
that pressure paid o f f 4.(1 minutes
before the break. R i le y headed home from c lose
range to give his side a half-time lead. If Clitheroe had won the first half
the second belonged to Newcastle as they gave everything in a bid to get
back into the game. First Burndred saw a shot go wide
and then the dominant Neil Pes- teridge was a thorn in the side of the Blues’ defence. But Clitheroe had their moments
when substitute Craig Dewhurst replaced the injured Paul Mullin and he quickly forced the keeper into a
fine save. With just five minutes left on the
clock Pesteridge’s f re 2-kick found the unmarked Burndred 30 yards out and he unleashed a rocket to earn his
side a point. • Clitheroe play host to Mossley on
