of 143-9. With the help of Simon

Gorton, who claimed 4-36, the pair skittled Northern for 105 in the final over. Whalley won the toss and

chose to bat at Station Road. And although they lost open

he was dismissed by his opposite number Ryan Maron with the score on 103. Andy Pratt followed for

just one, and Simon Gorton couldn't score. Steve Boswell and West-

Mixed fortunes in national knockout G

Batting first Clitheroe made 145

LITHEROE cruised past Preston in their first match in this year’s Abbot Ale Cup.

before losing their final wicket with Paul Seedle top-scoring with 55.

He was assisted by Andrew Burns

who made 30, and Neil Bolton, who chipped in with a very useful 32. Remarkably, those three were the only three Clitheroe players to make it

into double figures. Preston started their reply well and

at one stage had made it to 90-3 look

ing odds-on to win the game. But wickets fell rapidly after that and Preston collapsed spectacularly to

97 all out. Neil Bibby took three Preston wick

ets while Jonathan Fielding and Mick

Dewhurst took two each. Clitheroe 145 all out: M. Bolton 9; A.

Bums 30; P. Seedle 55; Fielding 1: M. Bolton 32; M. Dewhurst 0; P. Bishop 0; N. Bibby 0; N. Winckley 5; S. Bishop 2; M. Hargreaves 1

" ° Preston 97 all out: M. Hargreaves 5-1-14- 0; S. Bishop 5-1-11-1: N. Bolton 9-4-15-0: M. Dewhurst 9-1-30-2; Fielding 6.5-0-10-2: N.

Bibby 6-1-9-3.

T5 IB B LE SD A LE Wanderers X v lo s t their Sunday Abbot Ale Cup clash at Grappenhall but showed some signs of their poten

' . gloom and Wanderers finished on 106 . tial.

Batting first in a rain-affected game which was reduced to 35 overs Grap-

penhall made 157. David Howard and skipper Terry

Braithwaite took two each of the seven Grappenhall wickets to fall with Ainsworth and Martin Briggs picking

up one each. The target of 158 looked gettable but . . . .

Fielding delivers with bat and ball

ICKETS and runs win cricket matches and Clitheroe profes sional Jonathan Fielding came

up with both for his side on Saturday. The match with Read was a nail-biting

affair with a breath-taking finish. One spectator suggested it was cricket at

its finest as players smiled at each other instead of growling, umpiring decision were accepted without question and the rain

stayed away.

Fielding took 6-52 as Read were restricted to 122-9 off their 45 overs.

, ' . ,

And then with the bat Fielding hit 55 to guide his side to a five-point win.

Clitheroe won the toss and elected to field. Read openers Nick Marsh and pinch-hit

ter Malcolm Heyworth started confidently enough until Heyworth was stumped for four

in Fielding’s fourth over. That was the signal for the brake to be

applied. In the next 16 overs Read added only 11 runs but lost Marsh and Terry Lit tle. Both were bowled by Fielding. There then followed a stand of 69 between

skipper Peter Usher and professional Kashif Ibrahim, the latter being first out for 35

bowled by Neil Bolton. Usher followed two overs later with the

score at 99-5. Ryan Heyworth and David Parsons took _ . . „ , ,

the score past the century mark, but at 107 both lost their wickets, Heyworth for seven and Parsons for one. Four runs later Naveod was out, bowled by

Bolton for three, but a valuable 11 runs came next between Gary O’Connor and John Longden, the latter being out first, bowled by

Fielding for nine. Wicket-keeper Worsley was last man in for

Read and he managed to keep the last ball out of his wickets and off the 45 overs Read

t A

had totalled 122-9 with Fielding taking 6-52. The question during the interval was, had

Read scored sufficient runs on what was a difficult batting wicket? .

.

The visitors’ reply was in the hands ol Mark Bolton and Andrew Bums.

. Neither seemed in much trouble against

the opening overs from Ibrahim and Parsons. But at 26 Parsons struck first bowling

Bums for just 14. Ibrahim struck in the next over to have ,

Bolton caught behind the wicket for 14. Fielding them took control of the situa

tion. By picking out the loose ball he scored 55 off only 64 balls. At the other end he was losing partners fast

with Neil Bolton (three), Paul Seedle (two) and Mick Dewhurst (nought) all going cheaply. Captain Phil Bishop gave stout support

and when Fielding was out caught by Ibrahim off Malcolm Heyworth, the 100 had

been passed and 108-6 had been reached. The threat to a Clitheroe victory was

being posed by Heyworth’s spin and without addition to the score he had bowled Neil Bibby without scoring and had Neil wmck- ley lbw, also for nought. Ibrahim chipped in bowling Steven Bish

op for one and with 12 overs left 14 runs were still needed with just one wicket remaining. Phil Bishop with his experience was bat

ting stoutly and under his direction last-man Hargreaves was defending stubbornly. The score was progressing towards its tar

get, but the overs were being used up. In the end Clitheroe reaching a winning

score thanks to a stroke of luck. Hargreaves thick-edged a four which took

his side to the 123 target. In the bowling department Malcolm Hey

worth took the honours, returning figures of 5- 24.

Wanderers knocked off course by form team

R

IBBLESDALE Wanderers came up against the form side in the Vaux Ribblesdale League on Sat-

urday and crumbled to a 50-run defeat. Padiham proved just too strong on home

Turf and Wanderers could not carry through their winning form of last weekend.

Malcolm Heyworth was Clitheroe’s man-

of-the-match with 5-24, but his efforts were not enough to save his side.

. Wanderers won the toss at the Arbories

and put Padiham into bat. It seemed like a good decision when Wan

derers’ professional Shahid Nawaz saw off Padiham’s paid-man Mark Harvey for nine. He was caught behind by John Rain. Padiham were 28-1 and then suffered a inim-

coliapse as Anthony Hall (nought), Pankaj Tripathi (nought), Andy McNicholas (four) and skipper Neil Anderson all went cheaply. That reduced the home side to just 38-5 and

it was down to Nasser Mehmood to give open er Metcalfe much valued support as those two set about rebuilding the innings. They came together in the 19th over and

stayed there until the 27th when Mehmood was stumped by Ainsworth off Howard for 23. That had taken the score on to 73 and then

it was Stephen Gee’s turn to keep Metcalfe company with a stout 11 before he was caught behind by Rain off Graham Monk’s bowling. Sharif went soon after for two before Andrew Robinson hit a quick-time 11 to take

the score through to 137. Shaun Rashid was unbeaten on nought

when the overs ran out. But still there too was Metcalfe, who had

batted throughout the innings for a superb unbeaten 64.

The score was 138-9 when the innings close, giving Padiham a decent chance of win

. . .

ning the game. It was good recovery from stumbling to i>-

38 to add another 100 runs for the loss of just

four wickets. Wanderers began their reply in fairly con

fident mood and had pushed the score on to 21 before the first wicket, that of Duckworth

for eight, fell to Harvey. Harvey struck again to have Howard

caught by Robinson for nought and Wander ers’ collapse was under way. Nawaz provided some resistance but was

run out when 18 and, apart from him, just two other Wanderers’ batsmen made it to

double figures. Harvey was the pick of Padiham s bowling, „

taking 5-40 off his 20.5 overs. He was supported well by Rashid with 0-15

off six and Stephen Gee with 2-23 ° fU ^ -____ They combined to steadily reduce Wanderers

to just 88 all out with two scores of 15, to Ram and Ainsworth, the highlights of the innings. Only skipper Terry Braithwaite was left at

the end of it all. unbeaten on six after seeing his side succumb in just short of 40 overs.

Whalley v Blackburn

Northern WHALLEY

Northern's reply, with Smith sending Bromley back in his

second over with the score on

one. Captain Mel Gillibrand

and Maron added 22, with Maron (19) the main con tributor, but Smith trapped him leg before. Gillibrand and Weaver

took the score on to 54, but once Gorton bowled the lat ter for 17, wickets fell at reg ular intervals. Gorton and Smith

claimed a further three vic tims each as Northern stum

bled to 78-9. Fish and D. Smith showed

brief resistance, but Smith ended their interest in the game off the first ball of the

final over, howling Fish for 10. Whalley now have 12

points from a possible 14, and look to continue their great start in the weekend

double header. On Saturday they enter tain Early, who have also got

off to a flier, while they travel to Edenfield on Sunday.
