Sonia jumps to it for and it’s all caught

A DEATH-DEFYING duo from Clitheroe Social Club swopped pulling pints for pulling ripcords in two daring

charity parachute jumps. Clitheroe Social Club assistant

steward Mark Booth (25) had hurled himself from aeroplanes several times before when he approached club bar-maid and mother-of-three Sonia Smith to take the plunge with him to raise money for MENCAP. Plucky Sonia (32) had never made

a parachute jump before, but she seized the chance as she had always wanted to experience the adrenalin rush of skydiving. So the two approached Skyline Promotions, a company which specialises in helping people reach for the skies to raise

money for charity. After only a day's training each, the two made their hair-raising

jumps at Cockeram Airfield, near Lancaster, with the Black Knights Parachute Centre. Each went up on separate occasions, but joined forces to raise £800 for the learning disabil ities' charity, through regulars at the social club and other local sponsors. They were both presented with a cer tificate by the Black Knights in recognition of their brave efforts. Mark went it alone and stepped

out of the plane at 3,500 ft above the ground, whereas Sonia dived in tan dem, strapped to an instructor, at a very cool 11,000 ft. Mark confessed that any confi

But my instructor was great with me and by the time we got to 11,000 feet I was full of confidence. My hus band, Jimmy, and my three children Chris, Thomas and Shelley Jane, were all there behind me back down

A "MERIT ASSEMBLY" a t St Michael and St John's RC School, Clitheroe, lived up to its

name. Local NSPCC represen

tative Sharon Pinar received a cheque for almost £300. Her talk some weeks before had inspired the children to raise money for those less fortunate than themselves by doing house hold chores at home. And a non-uniform day

produced nearly £130 in "fines" to help with the drive to send relief trucks to the Sudan. The parish has now paid for six, against original hopes there would be enough money for one. Our picture shows just
