ONE of Billington's best-known residents and a

stalwart of Whalley Abbey has died. Having become known to Women's Auxiliary Air

many locals as "the lady who works at the abbey" after a 34-year stint in its gift and tea shop, Miss Edie Chew (97) died in Clitheroe Hospital last Sunday. One of 13 children, Miss

Chew was born in Gisbum, but moved to Nab Side Farm, Whalley, with her family when was she 16. After spells as a housekeep er in London and Black pool, she returned to the Ribble Valley to work as a weaver at Green Brothers'

Mill. During the Second World

War, she volunteered for the

Force and was posted to Suffolk to work as a camp

cook. In more recent years,

Miss Chew, who was a great-great auntie, worked as a teacher at Brockhall Hospital and as a cook for the Church Army seaside mission. Her funeral will take

place at noon tomorrow in the chapel at Whalley Abbey, followed by crema tion at Accrington. Her family ask for no

flowers, but donations in her memory to Whalley Abbey.

Mother and child abandoned car when flames leapt from bonnet

A STARTLED mother and child had to abandon their car when flames began leaping from under its bonnet. Clitheroe fire-fighters took 30 minutes to extinguish the

blaze, which they traced to an electrical fault. The fire began after the car's engine cut out as it travelled along Bolland Prospect, Clitheroe.
