TRADITIONALLY, at this time of year, if any one was seeking a recommendation for a picnic wine, for drinking in the garden on a sunny day, a German Riesling would be an automatic choice. Writing this on. Monday, a statement like that could not have been less appropriate as the whole day was cold, wet and windy. I am just hoping
the heatwave materialises soon. ' The fact that Germanic wines are so fresh and fruity
with only a (relatively speaking).low alcohol content makes them ideal for lunchtime arid afterrioon consump tion, without knocking you out for the rest of the day. German Riesling is also very versatile when matching wine with food, simply because it appears in so many styles, from the driest and rriost popular style Kabinett (which is also the lightest, natural, unsweetened wine) on to Spatlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Trockenbeere- nauslese, and finally Eiswein, all of which are picked at varying degrees of riperiess. Containing higher levels of natural sweetness, the rare and very sweet Eiswein is one of the world's greatest sweet wines.. The wine l am recommending this week comes from one of Germany's oldest and most respected estates,

many, and we at Byrne's were very fortunate to be offered a parcel of von Kesselstatt's wines. The 1997 Josephshofer Riesling Kabinett is a beautifully clean, delicate, medium dry wine, with a typical floral, ripe fruity flavour,, and a pleasant acidity, which gives the wine balance. I can hon estly say that at £6.99 this wine offers outstanding value

some of the world's longest-lived white wines, with age Reislings become very rich and honeyed, losing all their acidity. The Josephshofer would happily repay a few more years cellaring,
but.it is difficult to resist in its youth.
This extremely underrated grape variety also produces '
horticultural excellence and mix with incredible family value. Blend 100,000 visitors with hundreds of the country's top growers competing in more than 400 - different competitive classes and you have just some of the ingredients whicn have established Southport Flower Show as the highlight of the Gardening Calendar. Southport Flower Show is the only show
of its kind to offer exhibitors and visitors a different experience year after year and 1998 will be no exception. This year the show will echo the colour of a continent
