They were the Food ‘ Flying Squads, bands of women organised by the Ministry of Agri culture and Fish in the '50s and '60s. raderie between the women, as Mrs Dixon recalled: "We thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a wonderful atmosphere within the squad, in which everyone pulled together. We did a lot of off-road map reading exercises, where we would drive in a convoy led by a tank. It was quite an adventure."

ment finally closed down,, the.FFS went with it, the government deemed it was no longer worth the expense spent on the squad. I t was the end of an era. "It was very sad. We were all very sorry, because we had all become such good friends, but we have had many happy reunions since." said Mrs Dixon.
