Justice at last as Blues win easily
Nantwich Town 1 Clitheroe 3
A F T E R i t looked like Clitheroe had fallen o u t of favour with the gods, justice was finally done as the Blues ran out easy winners against
a poor Nantwich side. Denis Underwood's men created a
sackful of chances a g a in s t the Cheshire side, b ut until the Blues drew level just after the hour, it had n't looked like being their day. Nantwich collapsed a f te r the
equaliser, and they also lost their disci pline as they were reduced to 10 men. The Blues stated their intentions
within two minuts when young Lee Slater, handed his first s ta r t, sent Paul Mullin down the inside left channel and he pulled the ball back for Gary Butcher, whose shot was
blocked on the line. But a loss of concentration a t the
back saw Clitheroe fall behind on five minutes when a quick throw found the Blues back-line disorganised and a deflected cross from Andrew Brownsword was slipped home a t the fa r po s t by th e unmarked Ray Notice, with Jason Jones also free. Slater struck the post with a fierce
shot moments later after some good Clitheroe pressure, and th e Blues s ta r te d to play the ball down the flanks to get crosses in, rather than hit long, high balls into a congested and narrow midfield. Dave Bennett had a volley blocked
from a Hill corner as the Blues con tinued to search for an equaliser, while Mark Walsh shot wide under pressure from keeper Joe Paladino from a fine through-ball from Butcher. Walsh was again denied by the
keeper when he delayed a shot from a Slater pullback, before Mullin had a
tage of a defensive slip, only to see his shot cleared off the line. But on the hour, the breakthrough
finally came when Slater cut inside, played a one-two with Mullin, and was scythed down from behind by
Simon Ashton. Walsh took responsibility, but Pal
adino dived to his left to keep the spot-kick out. However, Mullin was alive to the s i tu a t io n and lashed home th e
rebound. A minute later Walsh, desperate to
find the net after having his penalty saved, picked the ball up on the right, cut inside and unleashed a vicious shot across Paladino into the comer. At the end of an action-packed
shot kept out by Paladino's legs after skipper Chris Grimshaw raced infield and released the tall targetman. Xav Bowers headed over from
another fine Hill comer, before Ben nett went close with a free kick just
before the break. How Clitheroe were behind at the
interval beggared belief. But ra th e r th an let their heads
drop, they continued to do the same things after the restart, knowing the break would surely come. Bowers again missed the target
with a header from a Clive Dunn free kick, before Walsh was booked, and lucky to stay on after a wild lunge at
Paladino. The keeper had been constantly time-wasting after the Nantwich goal,
and a frustrated Walsh tried to kick the ball out of his hands, only to catch the former boxer in a delicate area. T h a t clearly ra tt led Nantwich, and Grimshaw almost took advan
