CHRISTMAS is virtually on the doorstep. Over the past few weeks; East Lancashire Newspapers has

; jHHMd up with Leisure in Burnley to provide advice and handy hints on how to shape up for Christmas and the new year.

This week Alan Simpson, from the Thompson Centre, Burn-

ley, gives advice about aerobics. There is also a chance to win six free aerobics sessions to help

you achieve your aims.

THE lucky winners of the first fitness compcti- , tion were: Pauline Far rell, of Allerton Drive, Burnley; Mrs B. Wor den, of Hawthorne Place, Clithcroc; and Mrs M. Cress well, of Crow tree

Grove, Roughlce. ' They all correctly stat

....aerobics! Before you recoil in horror at the

thought of legwarmers, matching leo tards and handbags, be reassured that this kind of workout has come a long way since the days of "Fame" and very few classes remain in the mould of dance-based, highly-choreographed j sequences that Pan's People would be

more suited to follow. Some are even suitable for men! It

is just a case of finding a class and an instructor to meet your needsl The choice of workouts is vast,

ranging from the familiar hi/lo, step and aquacise to newer fads like slide,

boxcrcise and spinning. Many sports and leisure centres

offer beginners’ sessions and these are an ideal introduction to group exercise. There are also refresher courses for anyone who has not exercised for a

while. Instructors should be on hand to

advise on the type of class that is right

for you. Above all, any aerobics class you

attend should be safe, effective and appropriate to your level of ability. Your instructor should be monitor

ing your progress in class, taking time to talk to you and offering suitable

alternative exercises. There is a class out there for you, but

it may take a little time to find it. Once you do find it, you will soon see what you have been missing. It is important to remember that there is no quick fix or magic pill
